Day trip to Savannah from HHI?

We have eaten dinner at the Lady and Sons twice. First trip was DH, myself and DS and DD. DD had the buffet, she liked the food and especially loved the Oeey Gooey Butter cake, DS and DH had fried shrimp and raved about them and I had shrimp wrapped in bacon, also great. The best sweet tea anywhere. DH and I were back by ourselves two years ago.We both had fish and it was very good. I thought we were there late morning and got a reservation for dinner for about 7.
Last trip with DH and myself we sat on the third floor and during dinnner the elevator opens and out comes Gordon Ramsey, who produces Paula Deen's show. Very tall guy. He went into the bar area with a few people. No one else in the place seemed to recognize him. We were just about done with dinner. I asked our waitress if I could go over to see him and get a picture and she said they are not allowed to take a picture or bother anyone who comes in but, hinted that no one can stop me from going over, so over we go to say hi. He was very nice, there for dinner with a few friends and I think he said his brother (could be wrong on that) DH and I got our picture taken with him, he said at the time he was there going over production things with Paula Deen. I would have loved to see her. I think this was in 2006.

Not true...

Charleston is about 2 hours north of HHI and along cop infested roads. Savannah is about 45-50 minutes WSW of HHI.

Looks like I used the wrong map. According to Mapquest it is more like 60 miles farther. However, IMO Charleston still has more to offer than Savannah. We could easily spend two weeks in Charleston, and outside of the 8th Air Force Museum, Savannah really is just a day trip.

Yes, Lady & Sons is handicapped accessible. There are elevators to take you upstairs to dining rooms. Have a good time!

Using a southern " down the road apiece " map :rotfl2:

Charleston is still over 100 miles from HHI.

OP has 5 kids along, jmho, Savannah is the saner choice for day trip and closer (much) proximity to HHI will be a god send when everyone is hot & tired and ready to call it a day.

We have been to Savannah numerous times and I do want to highly recommend a different eatery than Lady and Sons (which is fine, but expensive, touristy, and hard to get into). We'd suggest going to Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House instead (http://www.mrswilkes.com). This is true Southern eating at its best. You wait outside and then are seated Family style (i.e., as many as you can get around a table for 12-15) and there are 30 something different bowls of food on the table, all you can eat.

Be forewarned though. If you don't get there by 10:30am, the wait can get a bit long. 10:30am will put you in line most days to get in at the first seating when they open at 11 (they are only open 11-2 and I think only M-F). Also, they only take cash, so note that.

However, the food there is awesome and it is a great experience. I believe it's on the Southern Living 10 places to eat in the south (along with Alabama's Dreamland Ribs, among others - sorry, had to put in a shout-out for my home state). Anyway, just wanted to pass along a great alternative...
