I'd like to start reading some Dave Ramsey books - DH and I need to start saving some money!!! We always had a very healthy savings acct., then we bought a house. Six years later, and no more savings. We make decent money and have a house that is within our means (small house, just the two of us) but we don't spend/save our money wisely.

Ramsey has quite a few books! Which one should I read first??

I'd start with Total Money Makeover. It's a pretty easy read, and gives straightforward steps in order of what to do and how to do it. There are also little success stories sprinkled throughout for motivation.

I would take the course, a local church will likely have one this fall. Ramsey's website can set you up with a local class.

www.moneysavingmom.com was showing that DR was offering your first class on a trial basis, for free. Not sure if that is still being offered, but it might be worth looking into.

As far as the books go, TMMO is a great start. I found that many of his books sound the same, but I think that one is the most popular.

Good luck!

TMMO, and get it from the library! :)

And join llnoe.com (that's livinglikenooneelse.com, but the abbreviation works just as well) to read about real people doing the program. Awesome info there.

I would say check out the book The Total Money Makeover out of the library and/or listen to his show for free on the radio or online: http://www.daveramsey.com/radio

If your cable provider has the Fox Financial channel, you can also watch his TV show.

You don't have to spend any $ buying his books or taking his course IMHO.

Even before you get the book, you can start by making sure you have $1000 in savings for an emergencies that may come up.

Then, list your debts from smallest to largest and tackle the smallest ones first.

If you don't have any debt, then go to the next step, which is to save 3-6 months of your expenses in a liquid emergency fund.

I think I have been listening to Dave for too long; I know his spiel by heart.

Good luck!

My library doesn't have any books by Ramsey (it's funny - we have a "full" library - but they NEVER have what I want!). I'll try listening to the radio show before I order the book!

Thanks, everyone! :thumbsup2

Even if your library doesn't have a copy of the book you want they can borrow from another library in your county, state, etc. :)

I agree.. Start with the total money makeover. Its $15 on his website right now. I either listen or record his show everday on xm radio. Im actually listening to the recorded shows right now on my xm. He has great advice.

I would recommend Total Money Makeover. My husband & I just paid off our last debt this March, just after the birth of our most recent addition, and we are taking the kids to Disney in two weeks to celebrate! :) Also, you can subscribe to an hour of his radio show for free via iTunes.

Ditto TMMO, check it out from your library and if it's something you think you'll want to do, you can then decide if you want to buy a copy. You can usually find them cheap online, but even full price I think it's only $20, a small price to pay for financial stability!

I like Dave's get-out-of-debt plan, I think it's the best out there. But once out of debt I don't like his investing advice. Once you get on a budget and get rolling on the debt snowball, you may want to start looking at some other financial books.
