They're on the Today show this morning. I've seen the band twice in concert with friends who are big fans.

To be honest, I don't get why so many people LOVE him and the band. IMO, they're okay, but nothing really speical.

I love Matchbox 20/Rob Thomas, Michael Buble, The Doobie Brothers, etc.

What am I missing? :confused3

Maybe it's just a matter of taste. :)

I enjoy their music and some of their songs are in my list of favorites but they do have a pretty intense almost cult following and that is something that I just don't get either! So I don't think your alone on that front!

You in college? no? then their is no reason to listen to Dave Matthews Band. Definition of a college band.

They are good, but I don't consider myself a fan. Some bands seem to have that massive network of people who will go to the shows. The Grateful Dead and Phish come to mind as other examples. DMB have sold a lot more music than those bands though.:confused3

The majority of DMB music is not "good" by any academic definition in either form or content (of the music or the lyrics). DMs head must be a crazy place. Every once in a while they put it all together and have a good individual song, but on the whole they are at best a "C" or maybe a "B" band on all levels.

Given their collegiate following perhaps they sound better when high on pot, haha.

I don't get them, either... I swear I watched this morning to get a clue and I swear, it looked like your drunk brother in law at a wedding! :lmao:

his voice has always annoyed me...I can listen for a short time but not very long...several of my friends are huge fans and see him every year when he comes through, but no way am I paying $50 for that...If I'm paying that much for a concert, I'd better be getting more...

I will bravely step forward and proclaim my love for Dave Matthews Band! It's an acquired taste I guess.

I don't get it either. They have some OK songs. I like "Crush " alot. I have seen them in concert- it was pretty boring minus the people watching. Maybe I wasn't in the right frame of mind? It seemed like some old friends jamming on and on and on more than a big name music act. The played very few actual songs. It seemed like they were playing more for themselves than for the audience. I wouldn't go again even if it was free and I had a rock star parking pass.

As a 53yo, whose collegiate days are long behind her and who has never seen the need for getting high on anything other than life, I can tell you that his following goes far beyond the college crowd.

The reason is that he's different from almost every other commercial band out there. He does things musically that noone else is willing to do. Turn on mainstream radio and every song/singer is just a variation of the same thing. Dave does things with instrumental arrangement that is unique today. He's not afraid to experiment with sound and arrangement. He thinks outside the box. I'll give you that his vocals and lyrics leave something to be desired, but the use of varied instruments and the combo of different sounds is what has earned him such a huge following.

I am a huge DMB fan and have been since the end of college (though I never got to see the band in college)! I love the eclectic sound of the music--the fact that they use a sax and a violin and that there's no real lead guitar. I love the combination of folk, funk, rock, and pop.

I'm one of the cult and LOVE it. Sitting 5th row this year here in VA Beach! Woo hoo! (Don't ask how much I paid for the tix, though!)

My son is a HUGE DMB fan, but he is in college. Enough said. Actually when my son plays his music I really don't mind listening to it. Better than some other stuff!

I am not in college and they are by far my favorite band to listen to. To me their music is a nice combination of something upbeat that you can sing along to and something that you can relax and get drawn into.

I see them also as being a band that is not just about the words to their songs but the actual music behind them. They get so into what they are playing. I actually prefer listening to their live CDs over their studios CDs because of that.

Everyone has different music tastes and listens to music for various reasons. Country, Rap and Christian music are not my taste so I don't listen to it, but I also don't question why other people do.

I work just up the block from the plaza. You should have heard the music coming up the street and through the windows. Sounded extremely strange.

Oh and I just can't wait for 2 weeks from now when the Jonas Brothers are playing. I wonder if I can take the day off.

I'm hearing ya! :thumbsup2 DMB rocks!

I had no idea they had such a huge following! I like them alright, but they're not my favourite.

I thought it was weird that he couldn't stand still when he was being interviewed between songs.

LOVE DMB. I have since 1993. NO , not in college. Sorry not high on pot either. DMB has a great sense of community. I enjoy their music, always have. I no longer find it fun to sit in the lawn to see them but I still go year after year (and sit in the seats). The music is not a bunch of commercial crap written by some formula. It might not be the best but i love it. (it also does not hurt that the drummer is a huge STEELER fan!!!)

Several friends of mine really like the DMB, and they're old fogies in their late
40's :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Interesting; maybe I'll have to try listening to the instrumental part of their music and try to tune out the vocals.

Gheesh. :confused3 I wasn't questioning other people's taste in music; I was hoping for someone to shed some light on what they like about the band, thinking that perhaps it would enlighten me and I would have an appreciation for the band and the music they make. That's all, nothing more. ;)

I've been a fan since the mid-90's. I listened to them in college and still do now that I am no longer a college student. I really like thier music. I find the actual sounds to be enoyable - some soothing, some fun, some just enjoyable to kick back and listen to.

I find I relax when I play some of thier stuff. It's chill and low key.
