Daughter's curly hair is making me crazy!!!!

My girls are biracial and have crazy curly hair. We struggled for years until we found tightlycurly.com. It describes an entire process of the proper way to maintain curly hair (mainly biracial but I think that there are aspects aplicable to other types of hair too.) You would not believe the change in their hair. It used to be that within half an hour of coming out of the shower their heads would be one big ball of frizz. Now they go all day and it looks just as good as when it was first done. Highly recommend the process she talks about.

My 8 yo DD has curly hair that gets crazy tangles too. The pool really over dried her hair this summer. I use Nexus Humectress shampoo and conditioner. Then we use a leave in conditioner spray and sometimes, a detangler too. She has long layers in her hair but the tangles are back, despite having gotten a haircut 2 weeks ago. I did get lazy about putting a pony tail at night, so we will get back to that routine. I do brush her hair though, because she likes to wear it in a headband. She would love if I could blow it straight everyday, but I'm not talented in the hairstyling department.

As a kid I had very very thick very very curly hair the tighest pony tail I could pull together at base of neck was 6 inches around (try to get a pony tail holder aroung that!) Hair was very long too never shorter than waist length an sometimes down past me butt.

So curly that even when wet it only hung to 1/4 of it's length

At that time 30+ yrs ago I thought everyone brushed hair NO that was the last thing mine needed. What needed to be done was wash it condition it well (BTW it took at least 8ozs of shampoo to wash hair an about that much conditioner too) while wet get the tangles out an then just let it hang an dry naturally no brush or picking after it was dry.

When towel drying DO NOT RUB HAIR AN HEAD just wrap it gently in a towel or even better old tshirt does wonders.

I learned as an adult to pick hair out in shower with the conditioner on it, rinse wrap loosely in a towel an maybe pick hair out again just to get it laying the way I sorta wanted it to it always did have a mind all it's own I usually used a leave in conditioner in it too that I put on after towel drying. (ISO makes a bouncey creme that is a leave in conditioner that worked well for me a big 32 oz bottle lasted me about a year the the few yrs.

www.curly.com has lots of curly hair hints an tips that you might try.

I never found any shampoo an leave in conditioner any better than the aussie mega products....aussie moist shampoo an conditioner for dry damaged hair always did the best for me. Vive was OK too but harder to find in my area.

As I have gotten older an gray hair has thined alot an last spring I went had all mine cut off it;s not anymore than an inch long anywhere on head now an I LOVE IT!!!

My daughter has very thick curly hair that was the bane of my existence for YEARS.. It wasn't until she was a teenager that we learned how to properly take care of it. OP, follow the previous poster's advice. Use aussie moist products, pick the hair out in the shower, never, ever rub it dry with a towel and let it dry naturally.

Never brush or comb the hair. Think of a curl as hundreds of hairs that are curly, but they have come together to make one curl. When you brush or comb it, you break up that curl into hundreds of curls...and then you have frizz.

I have very curly hair, so does my DD. A few things I've learned: too much swimming is hard on curly hair. I've tried every cholrine product on the market, none of them work as well as tomato paste (ketchup will work, too). Wet the hair, shampoo with tomato paste, rinse--repeatedly. Then shampoo as usual. Your hair will be shiney, soft and not green.
I shampoo every other day or so, and use a LOT of conditioner. I comb my hair with a wide tooth comb, only when very wet (in the shower). D does the same, but wraps hers in a bun, and sleeps with it that way (on top of her head, it's long). Even if your D's hair is very layered, a bun on top will help. If you need to "touch up" her hair in the morning, a spray bottle of water can be very helpful

I like the Curly Girl book...it's a fun read with good advice.

I too have naturally curly hair, which is becoming frizzier as I age. My hairstylist told me that it is due to the fact that grey hair is finer.

Anyway, I use the CHI Silk Infusion and it has really made a difference. I also began today, using a shampoo that is sulfate free. This should also help. I never have problems with tangles since I only comb throu my hair when it is wet and has the CHI Silk Infusion in it. It actually seals the hair shaft and helps hair to dry faster.

Later this month, I am getting a Brazillian Blowout treatment on my hair. It takes 90 minutes and has to be done again approx. every 3-4 months. It takes away frizz, but not the curl. It also helps with problems when the weather is humid. You hair will not "draw up" with this treatment. It is not a chemical process.

I am so excited to get this treatment!

The keratin treatment is fantastic (which is what the Brazillian blowout is)!!!!! I'm on my second treatment (6months apart) and I love it!!! I tend to have frizzy curly hair and this makes it so much more managable. Make sure you use sulfate free shampoo/conditioner and that will help it last and go as long after getting it done as you can before you wash your hair. I sued to get the Japanese thermal straightening treatment which made my stick straight...its so nice to have "normal" body now!

The last few yrs I mostly shampooed with conditioner.

I invested in a wide toothed comb that hung on shower head for combing conditioner thru hair in shower it cost me a whole 1.00 more than 20 yrs ago still going strong LOVED that thing.

My hair no matter how old I got or what I used still FRIZZED really bad if handled when dry. Tried all the detanglers by the time I got enough on hair to do any good it was WET an it was so much cheaper just to wet it down an use my conditioner an an pick it out in shower. Along with being much faster.

Till the day I cut it off I could bursh hair out dry, comb it or just run fingers thru hair an make an instant afro which actually is good for the hair and scalp once inawhile it allows everything to breathe not something to do unless you sure your in for the day or it's halloween.

I grew up at a time when half breeds was not accepted an was often asked or it was assumed that I was half I wasn't but I did have very full lips to go with the thick curly hair.

MMMMMMMM about pool hair.... The last 15 yrs I've had my own pool very little chlorine in it had an extra filter between filter an intake on pool thatwas made out of silver an copper which out oxygen in the water.Lack of oxygen is 1 reason we need chemicals in pool.

The sun is very very damaging to the dry curly fine or brittle hair. I have been known to slather a cheap condtioner on hair before going out to the pool for the day that really seemed help. Wearing a swim cap or hat helps too....tho I never did find swim cap that did not leak or slide right off head when hair got wet an water would run up under the cap.

Ringlet curls? Oh I had full fledged long curls.....think Nellie on little house on the pairie mine was REAL mom had to brush hair for me had to do everything but wash it. The curls stayed in from 1 week to the next an was kept that way till jrhigh school Mom did not know any other way to take care of my hair an it worked was far easier to take care of in those long curls than any other way.

Yet when I cut hair last spring my hair was still trying to hang in those ringlet curls that looked like a very tight spring an when pulled bounced just like a spring.

Oh an speaking of swimming we had an indoor pool at my jr an sr high school swimming was a part of gym class an I always got swimming in the dead of winter my hair never fully dried out from the time I started swimming till the end of swimming class more than 2 months later not even on the weekend cause that was when I washed hair.

Brushing hair out for school took about 45 mins too which was usually done during the 45 min bus ride to school.

OP check out the wooden hair tools brushes combs an picks I know some with the curly hair swear by them an they do last a very long time even tho they expensive I never had any of the wooden tools but would have liked to have tried them. You will prolly have to order them online but I think they might be very well worth it. Sorry i don't have a web site saved nor time to search myself right now.

Just chiming in as it looks like you have had a lot of great advice. My daughter does not have curls but super coarse thick hair and is super tenderheaded. We LOVE The aussie products as well. Moist (?) shampoo followed by their 3 minute miracle conditioner. Definately keeps tangles in check and super cheap as well.

I have a very (and I do mean VERY) full head of coarse, heavy curls, and have struggled with them since I was very little. I finally found my lifesaver about two years ago-Regis Design Line Curl Lock!!! It's a leave-in conditioner that works better than anything I've ever seen for softening it up to manageable. Try it, soooo worth it! :)
