daughter has hernia

My son had a double hernia repaired when he was 5 months old. It was his 4th surgery. He came through it without any problem. He has had 5 more surgeries since and each time he came through anesthesia just fine. He woke up scared and crying from hurting. But as soon as they let me back to recovery and I could hold him he would calm down. Everyone reacts differently when they get anesthesia.

Our childrens hospital in Houston is great. They start getting vitals, then you get hospital pjs to put on your child. Then the waiting room has TV's, movies, cartoons, video games, etc... to help keep your child occupied. (If your's doesn't you might want to bring something portable to keep her occupied. Then after you sign all your paperwork, and talk to the surgeon, and the anesthesiologist, you wait for them to call your childs name. Our hospital has wagons, big wheels, cars, etc... your child can ride in to go to surgery. We were able to go up to the OR and then they took Edward on in. Then we had to go back and wait. When surgery was done the surgeon came and told us, how things went. After that it was almost an hour, before they brought us back to the recovery room to be with Edward. You don't go back until your child is settled in a recovery bed and all cleaned up. Sometimes the nurses were taking care of three beds so sometimes had to wait.

No matter how prepared you are, you still have the anxiety until you get to go back to your child. Then you are too busy trying to comfort them and make them comfortable.

Good luck to you all!

*Hugs* to you! I know it can be really scary to think about your child having any kind of surgery!

Ds had an inguinal hernia repaired last year (he was 4-years-old.) The Children's Hospital in Minneapolis was GREAT. They put him under with a mask before they put in the IV, so that was nice. It was very hard to watch him fall asleep like that. I cried, even though I knew he would be fine!

He was up and around within a couple of days and 3 days later, you would never have guessed that he had just had surgery. Kids heal really fast ;)

PS: Since he was supposed to rest afterward, he did get some really cool new Superman sheets for his bed and LOTS of attention. He thought that was awesome :thumbsup2
