DAT files? How do I get rid of them?

I have noticed DAT files coming up in my "my downloads" folder. I don't know what they are and did not download them. When I try to put them in the recycle bin it says I can't because they are in use! What can I do to get rid of them?

These are data files that are usually linked to other files. For example, if you download music from Kazaa there may be a .dat file that corresponds with the .mp3 file. It could be the picture of the CD or the CD info for media player. It won't let you delete it because it is needed with the mp3 file.

There are lots of other ways they are used such as an index of your web site visits but if they are in your download folder chances are they are associated with music or video files.
