DAS vs Genie plus/ILL

Hi all,

long time no talk.

We are still planning a California vacation but life unfortunately got in the way but any chance I get I research.

We have heard in DLR genie plus is a necessity (we don’t like genie plus at all and never even used it. The only ILL we’d do is ROTR and maybe FoP).
We have also never been to DLR.

My mom has severe knee and arthritis issues and also has metal in her foot due to to prior surgery.

In thinking about it, we are wondering if if DAS would be better for us as opposed to genie plus. It is our understanding whoever in the party with her (just my dad and I) would be able to go on stuff with her under the old DAS but we have no idea how that works now.

Just wondering and hoping to get some opinions and answers.

Yes it is the same as before. If someone in your party qualifies for DAS and you are linked you would be able to use it (As long as the person with the DAS is riding as well). Remember DAS is not fast pass/genie+ and you will be waiting for the ride however you do not have to wait in the que line and be confined to that. The good news is you no longer have to wait in line at the blue umbrellas or walk to the attraction to get you next DAS.

Forgot to add one of the benefits for us is we can return anytime after the time given. If we are having any issues we can go back to the room and try and calm down and return when we are feeling better. With a genie+ you have to use it in that 1 hour window.

Just an FYI, if a mobility aide such as a wheelchair or a scooter will solve the "can't wait in line " issue you won't be issued a DAS usually. On some rides where you can't get through the queue with a mobility aid, you would get a return time to come through a separate entrance though.
Also if the DAS holder doesn't ride the ride, you can't use the DAS; so the rest of your party would need Genie+ to use the LL at that point.

You won't get a DAS for arthritis issues. My husband has terrible arthritis in his back and hip and ankle. The answer from cast members will be "get a wheelchair."

We use a DAS for our autistic son. In my experience, it's not like Genie Plus. If the goal is ride as many rides as you can, Genie+ beats DAS, hands down.

If you've never used Genie+, how do you know you don't like it? What is FoP in Disneyland?

Genie+ is NOT a necessity at Disneyland. You can absolutely do without it with a good touring plan and an early start. Disneyland has long hours most of the year so you can get a LOT done by being strategic, without needing to get Genie+ or ILL. Every ride still has a standby line.

We use our DAS, but we wait standby most of the time. We've never purchased Genie+, because we go every week and that would add up. I've never wished we had it. However, for a "once in a lifetime" type trip, I'd definitely recommend it. I'm not sure what you don't like about it, but if you are basing your opinion on how it works at WDW, just know it works differently at DLR. It's much more manageable, doesn't require a 7am frantic attempt to book times, and is much more conducive to "going with the flow."

Plan for a wheelchair rental for your mom so she can sit down when she needs to.

I also have "Old Age Issues +" that make it a challenge for my trips to DLR.
DAS is not what she needs for her trip with you to DLR.
As others have mentioned, your mom's issues are not DAS qualified.
Make a good rope drop plan with or without Genie+ and/or ILL's and each day will be fine.

I rent a scooter from an off-site company for each day of my trip.
I really love the scooter at the end of the day when I am returning to the hotel.
I remember the days before using a scooter and how it felt each night on the trek back.

My group has never used DAS and with good plan our day goes just fine.
If we are expecting it to be a very busy day then we might get Genie+. But we have found it not to be a necessity. Sometimes only one in the group will get Genie+ for the photos of the day not for ride ability.

Genie+ is not a necessity but can be helpful if you don't go often. My usual recommendation to people who are going for multiple days is to add it to the first day and then see how they like it and how many Genie+ attractions they want to do on subsequent days.

Your mom will likely go with a wheelchair and not DAS. In California Adventure, you will go through the regular line but towards the front, you may be sent to a special area to transfer into the ride vehicle. Some rides are like this at Disneyland but many older rides such as those in Fantasyland will issue you return times. You scan your tickets with a CM, usually at the exit of the ride and then return after that amount of time. Since you can use a wheelchair, Genie+ is even less necessary for Disneyland because you can go off to do something else between getting your return time and going back to the line.
