DAS Question For Family

We are going to venture to Disney World for the first time. My husband is in a wheelchair and we have two small kids. I know he will be ok waiting in normal lines because he is seated but my worry is our two kids (under 6 years old). My husband is limited in helping me keep control of the kids. DAS sounds like a good option because even though we would still be waiting for the rides, at least we could spread out a little so my kids are more manageable and not disrupting people in line. Any thoughts on if this is a good option as well as if Disney would give DAS based on the situation?

I would not expect to receive DAS. There are lots of single parents (or families with only one parent paying attention) in the parks on any given day, looking over their kids (1,2,3, or more). Your situation is not much different.

are you using a stroller for the kids? if so think about getting the stroller as a wheelchair tag so you can bring it in line with you as normally strollers are not allowed in lines. most likely you will not get a DAS as your husband is helped by wheelchair

You mention your children "disrupting people in line." Are your children disabled in some way? If there is no actual disablity involved, then DAS is not the appropriate solution in this case. FastPass+ sounds like it would be a better solution. Or maybe bringing along another adult (relative? friend?) to help you with the kids? The more, the merrier at Disney!

DAS is an accommodation for those whose disabilities make it difficult/impossible to wait in line and who can't be accommodated by a mobility device. In your case, none of these apply. The DAS is for the person with the disability, not to make it easer for someone who is traveling with the person with the disability.

Every kid under 6 years old is tough to handle in lines and with waits. DAS is for people with disabilities, not to aid caretakers manage easier. Utilize your FP+ and watch the app for shorter wait times.

I'd bring some tools to manage the lines - ipad, book, fidget cube, etc.

Unless the children have a medical need, they may very well not receive a stroller as wheelchair tag.

unless the kids have actual medical issues that prevent them from being able to wait in a line( being a bored toddler does not count) they will not qualify for a DAS.

I'm not sure what you mean by the bolded. Maybe you don't realize the crowds at WDW or exactly how the DAS works. There is no designated waiting area for DAS -- it isn't a specific room or such. You can go anywhere in the park while waiting for the DAS return time. That may not be as helpful as you are thinking. Spreading out isn't really an option and you would then need to keep the kids together in the crowds of the general park, which I think would be harder than trying to keep them behaving in the queues. Bring some small toys that you can pull out just for waiting in queues; make it something new so they haven't gotten bored with it at home. Try looking for hidden mickey's - you can buy a book or look online for some clues to take with you. Leave a buffer of space between you (in front) and your husband (behind) so the boys have a little space to move a bit between you and the kids aren't stuck staring at a stranger's posterior the whole time. And make good use of FP+. The TPAS forum has tips about "refreshing" to get 4th, 5th, 6th, etc. after your initial 3 are used.

What you are asking is not the intent of the DAS. I highly doubt they will give you one for this. What you could do is have your husband in front or behind the kids, and you take the opposite position and create a buffer zone around them.

Honestly, you will see a ton of kids struggling to behave in lines. As long as you are doing your best to manage the situation and not turning a blind eye to it, it will be fine.

I 'm going to make two suggestions that might help with the children. Plan on bringing a friend or grandparent \relative to help with the kids. Plan on bringing small figures (Disney characters, little calico critters, matchbox cars) in a zip lock bag. Make sure these are things you don't mind loosing. I've taken pages of blank paper and pencils having them practice writing their names, letters.

You will definitely not be alone with kids in lines. Some adults, don't like waiting in line, either!
