On the first day of school, I had one parent tell me "don't call me if she's sick - I'm not coming to get her until the end of the day". Greaaaat. So, what am I supposed to do w/her while she's puking up a storm!? Yes, I realize that Mom and Dad work ... but who is going to be complaining when I'm out sick b/c I caught it from their child?! That parent!!! I was out b/c of an appendectomy for 2 weeks. When I came back on Mon., this parent did nothing but complain to me that I was out sick. Uh -- it wasn't like I took 2 weeks off to go on vacation (I wish) -- this was no vacation! I had major surgery and, believe me, it was the last thing I wanted to do. Fortunately, I had a great guest teacher and left her complete, written out, pre-planned lesson plans with all the materials that she needed. Honestly, w/the lesson plans I left, a 5th grader could have come in and taught the class -- I was very "step by step, do this, do that". I wanted to tell the parent to be thankful that I left precise lesson plans and that their child didn't sit and watch videos all day long. But, no, I got a talking to for my absence. My principal was far more understanding than this parent was. And, yes, I notified all the parents prior to my surgery, informed them that it was unexpected and that it was as much as an inconvenience to me as it was to my classroom and students. Believe me, I don't like missing a day much less 2 weeks!!! I suppose the only way that parent would have been happy was if I had come back right after I was released from the hospital!
