Dance recital hair help?

I had trouble with buns staying in too..until one of the other gym moms told me her trick. She puts DDs hair in a pony tail, then braids or twists it into 3 or 4 sections, then wraps them around the base of the pony pinning them in. I have done this and the bun has lasted several days :rotfl: DD wanted to see how long it would last so slept in ti for a few nights once.

great minds think alike!

DD dances and does competitive cheer so we do hair ALL the time. For cheer it is high pony(think I dream of Genie) or half pony if it won't all go with NO bangs. THAT is fun (not). The got 2 be glued or the target brand hairspary in the white can are the only ones I have found that will keep them back all day without 1000 clips. For dance we only have to have all thier hair off the shoulder, but DD has 7 costume changes so I cannot change hair in between. The best thing i have found is double french braids. They hold well on most hair types and accomodate most of the headpieces well. I gel damp hair and then braid and spray.

For those who have daughters with thin/fine hair like my angel... a fellow competition mom taught me her trick! Spray the hairspray in your hand until it puddles. Then rub that into the hair to make the ponytail. It helps out with flyaways. I need to do this tomorrow for recital book pictures.

My daughters don't dance this year, but when oldest dd was competing we also used the yellow can of Got to Be Glued .... amazing ... literally like we glued it in place! My daughter has VERY thick hair too! So we would mist it with water so it was a bit wet, put it in the desired pony and then spray it with GTBG ... voila - helmet head! No movement! We also used a few clips that were the same colour as her hair and like someone said previously, you can't see them from the stage!

Good luck ... this is what I don't miss about dance - the hair and makeup! I am just not a hair and makeup kind of gal, so it was a real learning curve (and stressful!) for me!!!

Thanks, they aren't requested makeup thank goodness. I know some people that have gone crazy looking for certain colors!

Thanks everyone! I hate greasy looking hair but I guess the wet look is what they want as look as its not messy! I was a child of the 80's (used to spray the curling iron with aqua net as I curled my hair) so I can spray with with the best of them! I am a horrible hair parter, though so hopefully I can get it to stay and look nice! Looks like that yellow can of Got 2 Be Glued is what I need to find! Thanks again

i used the hair spray for a lot of my dance competitions and it stays for ever! i find hair spray works better than gel. in my 13 years of dancing using hairspray has been a lifesaver! :cool1:

My dd cheers and does cheer competitions and we also can't have any fly aways. We use FREEZE IT hair spray. It can be found at Walmart and it's in a gold can. It's amazing and works better than anything we have ever tried.

I was told once long ago to leave the hair dirty, well skip a washing before having to pin it up. The hairspray and gels hold much better to it than if it's freshly washed.

And our studio advises the students to do their hair fresh from the bath. Lol.

Here's my fail proof recital hair:

1. WET hair.
2. Use FINE BRISTLE brush to brush wet hair into ponytail (the wetter the better, wet as you go & do not fasten ponytail yet, just hold it in place with 1 hand.)
3. Apply a good amount of gel, smoothing back into ponytail with hand (I use Kiss My Face- not as chemical-laden)
4. Brush into ponytail in hand again.
5. Reapply gel, making sure to smooth it in past the point where the ponytail holder will be.
6. Fasten ponytail with ponytail holder(s).
For buns, continue:
7. Part ponytail into 2 or more sections (depending on amount of hair.)
8. Working with one section at a time, braid, or twist hair as much as you can.
9. Slowly twist one section around ponytail holder, flat to head, & then use pins to hold in place.
10. Repeat step 9 until all sections are secured.
11. Use hair net for bun (important & available at most drugstores,) start by placing one end over bun and streching it and twisting it over bun until there is none left.
12. Secure hair net with one pin.
13. I never need/use this step, but hair spray at this point can be used.

DD18 spent at least 4 hours a day, 6 days a week, all through high school, in the dance studio, and dances for two different companies in addition to taking classes. She uses Freeze It also. It works better than ANY other spray, even the G2BG or BedHead stuff. We affectionately call it "hair glue" because it sticks everything down. If you spray it on your hands and press them together, the skin sticks and you have to pull the hands apart! This stuff will let you style your hair straight up in the air, if that's what you want to do! The really nice part is that it's easy to get out. Just take out the bun and "crunch" your hair. You can physically break the polymer and then just brush your hair.

Don't forget to use a hair net. That's how these buns look so smooth and stay so well. Also, none of the dancers at either company use bobby pins for their buns; old fashioned hairpins are the way to go. You can buy extra long ones at Walmart, or order heavy duty hairpins (and I mean it) through places like discountdance.com
