Dance Class....how much?

DD will do six 90 minute classes per month, and we will pay $60 per month, before competition fees, and any shoes, costumes, etc. Dance is EXPENSIVE. It's a good thing I like her. LOL!

We just south of Boston, Ma. DD is 5yrs old and will be starting her second year of dance in September. Her class is 1 hour a week and it's $50 per month. The registration fee was $25 and we'll have to buy her recital costume in October, last year they were $50 each. She only needs one (this is the last year with just 1). Plus we have to buy the recital tickets in May ($15 each, last year we needed 7). Don't forget shoes (ballet & tap), tights and leotards.

My DD 9 dances 6 hours a week to the tune of $300 a month. It is her passion though and as long as she pours her heart into we will pay;)

DD12 takes one ballet class per week, and the cost is $50 per month. there is a $15 enrollment fee, and you now (just started this year) have to have a specific color leotard and tights for each class level, so of course, that is extra. recital costume is about $85, recital pics are about $62 and recital fee (includes 4 tickets) was $44 this past june. we also had to buy new ballet shoes this year, and that was another $22.

This will be my dd's 5th year at our dance school. She is now taking 2 classes a week, one is 1 hour and 15 minutes long and the other is 1 hour long. This year I will pay $84 a month. It gets a little more expensive each year. Last year was her first year taking 2 classes, each an hour long. Our school used to offer a 10% discount for paying by credit/debit card but since it has gotten so expensive for them to process these, they are no longer offering the discount. They do offer the 10% if you can pay for the whole year upfront but I can't afford to do that.

Plus there's recital tickets (we do a spring recital and a Christmas show), costume fees, leotards, tights, shoes and this year she needs a special pair of earrings because she is part of the performing company. It really adds up quick. But it's something that she loves, she has really excelled in it and it's the only activity she does. So we just suck it up.

Well so far there has been a wide range of costs!! Some are really out there, and I know when she starts into competition, it's going to go thru the roof! (She just turned 6, 3rd year in dance)

We have $15 reg fee for returning students, that plus first month's fee for class had to be paid by the end of June to get the discount. So that's paid.... but it's $35 for the first class, $15 for 2nd and $10 for 3rd & above. She's taking 2 classes (dance & cheer dance) plus tumbling. Going to pay for tumbling all at once and get that out of the way.

Have already bought the plain white tennies (indoor shoes) needed for cheer dance, she will also need tap shoes, approx $25 for the specific ones we're required to have, then we saw all the cute dance clothes.... with a 20% discount we're only up to $50 for clothes.....OH BOY!! (I might add, that's one pair of pants, one pair of boy shorts, one t-shirt, of course all sparkly & blingy)

Then we need another pair of plain white tennies for Midget Football cheerleading (which are outdoor shoes), plus the registration fee for that and her brother.....

AND! We haven't even got book fees yet for school.....oh my goodness August is really a killer on my checkbook. :lmao:

We do fundraisers too, (I sell the product we fundraise with, so that helps!) and I do appreciate every dollar we raise! Helps offset the costs, at least a little.

ETA: Recital tickets are $7 or $8 each....per person. That's not bad at all I didn't think, and usually it's a sellout.

$52 a month for a 1 hour class once a week (went up $5 from last season). $65 registration fee (even for returning families). Costume is $100 plus tax. Not sure if they need 1 or 2 costumes this year. Recital tickets were $26 this year, so who knows for next.

YIKES summerrluvv that's alot!!!!!

Anyone in competition classes, can you tell me, when your dear dancers win a competition, and there is prize money involved, who gets the money? Is it split between dancers or does it go straight to the studio?

My youngest takes 1/2 hour ballet, 1/2 hour tap, and 1/2 hour jazz back to back every week. My middle only takes the 1/2 jazz class. Our total this year is $116/month after the multi-class discount and sibling discount.

We had to pay a $20 registration fee for both ($5 discount for returning students).

Their costumes will probably run $50 to $60 for each class...so that will be around $200ish total. Luckily they take installments along the way!

My DD (6) is going into her 6th year of dance. Yep, she started 2 weeks prior to her 2nd birthday.

She will take an hour gymnastics class, 1/2 hour jazz and 1/2 hour hip hop and it will be $83.00 a month. No registration fee.

Costumes are usually about $70.00-$80.00 a piece for the recital. Tickets , pictures, programs, DVD's . Not cheap thats for sure.

We are in Ohio as well. We are going next Monday to an open house for a dance place that is near our home to check it out. If we decide to go there, we will pay $20 per session (a session = 4 weeks). DD who is almost 4 said she really wants to take dance lessons. I figure I would rather pay the smaller amount to see if she likes it then pay a huge amount at one of the bigger studios in the area to find out she doesn't like it.

If she likes it and wants to continue, I will send her to The Toledo Ballet school of dance. My grandma has offered to split the cost of the ballet school. $275 for a session which is 9 months.

We want our DD to be training only in ballet for a while. I compared about 6 studios in our area by calculating the price per hour (not including attire and recital fees, etc.) It ranged from $17 - $21 per hour. We are going with one that falls in the middle and one where we feel good about the instructor and her dance background and reputation. Our DD is only 5 and we looked at the way the studio handles later training too and thought it looked good - at least for now.

Just got my bill on Saturday. I told the kids we had to cut back as I do not want it to be over $100 a month. But, here is what we have and are paying as of the bill.

DD11 and DD8 in different classes (age group) but taking the same classes they each take
45 minutes Ballet once a week
45 minutes tap once a week
45 minutes jazz once a week
45 minutes hip hop once a week

We are at a non competive school and the bill will be $118 a month.

Turns out DD11 wanted to cut back, so she wanted to drop Jazz. That sound make it about $100 a month. We pay for 9 months.

I have enjoyed not paying that bill over the summer. Last year was $98 but DD8 didn't add jazz till this year.

I think it all depends on where you live. I live in the Baltimore / DC corridor and I own a dance studio.

My fees are lower than most in my area.

$45 a month for a 45 mintue class
$50 a month for an hour class
$60 a month for 1.25 hour class
$70 a month for a 1.5 hour class

I give discounts for multiple classes in each family such as $5 off the 2nd and 3rd, $10 off 4th and 5th $20 off 6th and 7th. I do not offer an unlimited fee. I have to pay my staff for every class they teach so therefore I need to have income coming in for every class I offer.

My registration fee is $15 per student $25 per family but if you register by August 1st I waive that. (Because in august I have time to process myself but past then I have to hire someone to process it .. to busy)

Recital fee is between 45 and 70 depending on the class and this includes costume, tights, practice music and rehearsal time on stage.

Tickets - $7 (Going up to $8 this year).

Again ... I am cheaper than most in my area.

You are getting 4 classes a month for $118??? WOW. That is CHEAP. You are only paying 29.50 per month for each class or 7.37 per class! that is a good deal IMHO.

We began today. $30 a month for DD and $25 for me. $20 registration fee for DD, no registration for me. DD's classes are jazz, tap and lyrical. Ballet would be a separate class at $15 which she isn't doing this year.

Recital costumes will be $50 each, DD will need at least 3, 4 if she and I do the Mommy and Me dance. I'll need one or two. This school does a raffle and bake sales to raise money for costumes.

Fees times 2:
$25 for jewelry
$5 for Christmas parade float fee
$40 stage fee for recital
$12 sweatshirt for parade
$12 tshirt for Street Fair performance and recital

New dance school this year and they use black shoes instead of tan. The instructor said DD could use what she had until she outgrew them.

These figures are very close to the school DD was at for the past four years.

one where we feel good about the instructor and her dance background and reputation. Our DD is only 5 and we looked at the way the studio handles later training too and thought it looked good - at least for now.

That is a very good way to chose one. DD's first dance teacher began dancing at age 2 and teaching by age 13. She stressed technic and termonology, even for the little ones. She had a smaller studio and personally taught each class.

The first class costs $97 per quarter (4 payments per year), but after the first class, each extra class gets a little less expensive...I think the second class costs $89 per quarter, the third $77, the 4th $67 or something like that. My daughter is taking 5 classes this year (hip hop, tap, jazz, ballet and street tap) and my bill will be something like $370 per quarter.

On top of that there are costumes and shoes (costumes are $60-$70 each).

Private lessons are $20 per half hour if you are in a duo, $15 per half hour (once a week) in a trio and $12 per half hour in a quad.

This is from the website of the place my niece took lesson from for years:

Courses offered: Ballet, Pointe, Jazz, Tap, Technique and Gymnastics.
Registration fee: $30 per family/year. ($25 prior to August 1, 2010)
Tuition is calculated per child / per month.

Any single or Combo class $ 55 per month
Any two classes $ 70 per month
Any three classes $ 80 per month
Any four classes $ 90 per month
Any five classes $ 100 per month
Private lesson*** $ 45 - 55 per hour
* Plus cost of costumes*

Our church also offers a dance class

$45 registration
$60 month- classes once a week 50 mins long
$100 for costumes

I don't even want to calculate what I spend per year on leos, tights, and shoes. Pointe shoes are a killer.

No kidding, huh? DD16 takes 6 hours of technique, 4 hours of pointe, 2.5 hrs of tap, 1.5 hours of partnering, 1.5 hrs performance, 1 hr. jazz, 1hr. modern a week. She's considering adding a lyrical class, too, if it fits. We pay $875 per semester, which is on a sliding scale and DD is maxed out so she can take pretty much whatever she wants and it doesn't cost any more. (I think classes start at about $170 a semester for a one hour class.) She dances with 2 ballet companies so she spends most of her weekend hours in classes also! In addition to costumes (about $400 a year, fortunately they can sometimes rent from the studio rather than buy new), I bought 7 pairs of $90 pointe shoes last year, plus tights, leos, toe pads, etc. We got off easy on the pointe shoes this year- DD severely sprained her ankle on 7/1 so hasn't been allowed to dance all summer! This was really hard on her (she had to cancel her Rockette training program) but I don't mind not having the 10 night NYC hotel bill OR the summer pointe shoes! Now she needs to get back in shape for Nutcracker auditions!
