Dan found out his residence today!

My daughter, Heather, got into Perth too!!!!! We just went out and got her a little fridge to add to the pile of stuff she's taking with her. She is so excited since she fully expected to get into Saugeen!!!!

I talked to a (favourite) parent last night. Her son (I didn't teach him-just his two sisters) got into Perth, too. Cameron is quite excited, and I told him to be on the lookout for the energetic, enthusiastic head soph!

Congrats to Heather! She'll love Perth. The first year my DS went to Western he made Saugeen his last choice and lo and behold that is where they put him. Then about a week before school started, they called and told him someone had backed out of Westminster residence and did he want it? Westmin is the smallest residence on campus so of course he jumped at it and had a fantastic year! Now I'm sure he would have had a blast at Saugeen, but I would have worried. I'm sure the things we hear about Saugeen are just stories . . .

I think that wherever they end up, they love it. It's just nice when they get one of their top choices. It's kind of like staying in a new hotel or an old hotel. After a while, it becomes home.

My daughter is quite the socialite so she will mix in very, very well wherever she goes.

Now comes the room-mate part. Heather's hoping for someone crazy, not psychotic crazy, but crazy fun!

As for the stories part...when we were touring Perth, I noticed a poster about a game called the "condom game" and there was a sentence about if you didn't have your condom to go and ask so and so. I thought it was pretty funny at that time but now...????Should be an interesting year.

I think that all children of DIS'ers should wear their mouse ears on the first day and then they will find each other to talk about how incredibly wacko their parents are.

Did anyone want me to take a spare pair over to Perth for them??

Congratulations to Heather, Damo. Dan, too, is now wondering who his room mate will be. Did you get to tour Perth? We only got to see Delaware, where there was a walk-in closet and a set of built-in drawers for clothes. At Perth, do you know if there are any more drawers in the closet? I only see filing cabinet type drawers beside the desk in the virtual tour pictures on the website.

He has not started packing anything yet. When I asked him what he is taking, he said "his guitar and computer and some clothes" and that since he's only a half hour drive from home, I can bring him over anything that he finds he needs.

I guess I'll get together the basics for him and then leave the rest up to him.

Actually some of the stories you hear about Saugeen are true NancyK I know of sevral first hand that may not be public knowledge but are quite funny well to those that know of them some parents may not think so mind you.

Julie, I'm not sure if there are drawers in the closet so what we bought a hanging canvas shelving thingy from Ikea. They've got them at Walmart and Winners and everywhere else. It will serve the purpose.

We did tour Perth and it is beautiful. It has a lot of colour to it, where the other residences are very bland.

I think girls need more stuff. Heather is bringing an iron and little ironing board and kettle (shhhhh!) and foam for the mattress as well as a mattress cover and bedding. Of course there is the computer and desk lamp, lots of clothes, a few dishes, etc. etc.

My favourite was the frosh week shower exchange. Yes the guys and girls all used the showers togehter before during and after quite a few drinks.

DH's floor did a "drink your way around the world" with each room being a different country – I didn't manage to get very many stamps on my passport. His room was Greece with a massive container full of Uzo and Gatoraide – yuck! Were we ever once that crazy?

At Perth, do you know if there are any more drawers in the closet?

Matt's not 100% positive, but he thinks there are drawers in the closet. Don't quote me on it, though. Dan's right - all he needs is his guitar, computer, and a few clothes. As he thinks of things, he'll email you. One advantage of being so close to home... Matt is also very fortunate that he has his aunts and grandmother in town. He needs cough syrup, he walks over to where Susan is working and she pulls some out of her oversized purse. LOL! He needs a ride home on a wintry night because someone has stolen his shoes at karate, and he calls Grandma. Lucky him! Now my youngest son is in Ottawa so he needs to have his winter stuff and everything else right from the start.

Thanks Nancy. I thought that if there weren't any more drawers, he could always take some of those plastic crates and build a shelving unit. The hanging shelves are a good idea too, damo.

Does Matt know if the beds are hard? We're wondering if we should buy one of those foam egg crate covers for the mattress.

Dan told me tonight that Western lost it's liquor license??

Ya the bar on main campus lost the liscence for serving 17 year old frosh.

We only lost the licence for the week of September 5 - 12. Of course that's one of our busiest weeks of the year. I try to look at the bright side because if some of the underage frosh are able to attend a dry event at one of those bars during frosh week then maybe when they turn 19 they'll head back to the Wave and the Spoke for their entertainment.

Oversized purse Of course, because who doesn't have Tylenol, Sinus Tylenol, Ventolin, Kleenex, diaper wipes, diaper cream, diapers etc int their purse. I see these girls with their teenie weenie purses and can't even imagine going across the street with only that much stuff.

I am popular though on those early mornings after the night before when some of the students have the Westminster flu, Perth flu, Saugeen flu......

Dan told me he had learned his lesson about drinking too much at a family wedding last year, so I'm hopeful he'll remember that experience all the way home from Toronto, during frosh week and the rest of the year there.

So, all the events during frosh week will be dry, Susan?

Orientation Week has been totally dry for a few years now. The sophs aren't allowed to drink at all that week. Including when they are at home in the middle of the night. Usually the two bars are open for the upper years and any 0ver 19 frosh that want to but this year all they'll get is pop.

Since the year before the double cohort the percentage of underage frosh has jumped. That is why the whole week of events sanctioned by the University Students' Council and UWO are dry.

I remember many a night and mornign suffering from the CEEPS flu. Another week that is full of drinking is during RUSH or greek week. Lots to see and drink during that time to. Ah the fond memories of University are all coming back to me now.

Hey D,

I too have some fond memories of those years. However, many of those nights I have no memories.

I guess that's why it's been 14 years since I last had something that had an alcohol content to it. At least I learned young.

Every fall I live vicariously through the students around me and think I'm glad those years are over. Now my excitement comes from

GOING HOME!!!

I think I'm nearing the 90 day mark!!!

Hi Julie,
I don't know if the beds are hard or not. My kids both managed okay during their first years at rez. I would probably let him try the bed for a week or so and if he's uncomfortable then buy him a foam pad. Are you getting him a little fridge? It's great for storing their drinks etc. He could buy some milk and have some cereal on hand for those mornings when he doesn't have time to eat in the dining hall. Will you be going through this again next year with Tim?
