Dakota Fanning Filmed In Scenes With Violent Sexual Content

July 24, 2006 6:00 p.m. EST

Mary K. Brunskill - All Headline News Staff Writer
New York, NY (AHN) - Twelve-year-old actress Dakota Fanning is currently involved in a movie in which her character is subjected to a violent sex act. The screenplay for the film, which is called "Houndog," contains one scene in which Fanning's character is raped and several other scenes in which the character appears naked or wearing only "underpants."

The movie is was being filmed in North Carolina, and Fanning's rape scene had already been completed when production was shut down due to lack of funds. Potential investors were turned off by the shocking material and didn't want to be involved with the independent movie, which had a budget of under $5 million.

A source close to the situation told the New York Daily News, "The two taboos in Hollywood are child abuse and the killing of animals. In this movie, both things happen."

After production was halted, producer Jen Gatien located emergency investors and was able to resume filming. The shooting was scheduled to be completed at the end of last weekend.

"Houndog" is set in the rural South and deals with abuse, violence and Elvis Presley infatuation.

Robin Wright Penn is the executive producer and stars in the film along with David Morse and Piper Laurie.

New York entertainment entrepreneur Lawrence Robins said, "The subject matter is very tough, but I was attracted to it because in the end it's a story about human understanding, about a little girl who's dealt a very bad deck of cards, but finds solace in the music of Elvis and survives."

There should be a law protecting child actors since they have parents that only see $ signs in their eyes. How sad for her. She was great in Dreamer.

I don't see why they'd have to use the actress for those scenes. There's no reason they couldnt have used a body double.

Well, what I read what was posted it said her character, not her so specifically so it is possible a double was used and not her.

I remember an interview with her about War of the Worlds and they asked her if she was scared while making the movie (something to that effect). She said no because of the way they film it it's not always in sequence and she didn't realize how scary it was until she saw the whole movie as one.
Perhaps this upcoming movie was done the same way and then once the scenes are all editied together it looks shocking.

Good point.

I saw a movie a long time ago that had scenes relating to child molestation. A very young child had to put her hand somewhere wrong on another actor. You could tell by the way the scene was shot that it probably wasn't shot that way, but it was still extremely shocking to see that.

I don't really see the problem. :confused3

Laws protecting child actors are very strict, and I'm sure utmost care is being taken to make it as comfortable as possible for her. She's always struck me as a young woman of unusual maturity and sensitivity. She chose the script--she must have seen something in it. It sounds like a chance for her to explore acting a tough, different role, and to maybe do some good for the world.

The more we talk about these things, the more they are acknowledged by society, the easier it is for someone to realize they are not alone and to get help.

:sad2:

Why do they have to push the envelope like that? She's a great little actress and I see her having a bright future.

There was another movie with a young actress in a similar situation. It was called ******* Out of Carolina.

There are laws protecting child actors - it's under child pornography laws. When they filmed Lolita with Jeremy Irons there was some press about how they had to put a book between the actress and Jeremy Irons' lap because she was underage and also how to handle the love scene

Personally I wouldn't leap to judgement without knowing more information. There's been sensitive material in movies involving minors in the past that have been handled legally and sensitively for the child actor. I don't see why being an independent movie would make things different this time around.

I agree - yes she is a minor but she, her parents and her 'people' all knew going in what the movie is about and saw the script.

Movies are almost universally shot out of order and they only film minutes of action at a time. I'm sure the finished product looks was worse than it did in filming.

Child labor laws and laws related to child actors are VERY strict.

Robin Wright Penn started in 'the business' young, is a mother and always struck me as a actress who didn't just see $$ signs and I can only hope that she wouldn't allow anything that truely harmed Dakota Fanning.

I wouldn't allow my daughter to film a movie like that, regardless of how the scenes are shot.

It's sickening what some people now view as "entertainment". :sad2:

And her parent's okay'd this? Nice.

Which movie was it?? PM me iif you'd rather.

i find it facinating that her 'camp' has chosen for her to participate in subject matter like this. not long ago a comic who made a very off handed remark (not intended to insult or degrade dakota fanning) about child actors saying something like 'the next thing you know we'll hear dakota fanning is in rehab' got major flaming from her people and some of the major studios saying that it was defaming to a child whose career was based on and would continue to be in the area of "wholesome family entertainment".

somehow i think my family will opt out of viewing this flick.

Perfectly stated. Sometimes films aren't just entertainment.

I agree that some movies are not meant for entertainment but to tell a message. I won't jump to any conclusions about this one just yet.

This is all been there done that, anyone remember Brooke Shields in "Pretty Baby"? It certainly didn't scar her for life.

I think as long as the child's interests are supervised and protected, there's nothing wrong with it. Like others have said, often things look very different on film than they actually were during the filming.

Frankly I'd rather see a movie like this one sounds to be with an underlying message about the strength of the human psyche than a movie like "Pulp Fiction" or "Rambo" that is just gratuitous violence.

Anne

Or Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver.

This isn't that big of an issue unless somebody makes it so. It's not like there was any actual sex involved or they made her do anything she didn't want to do.

I won't watch any movie where anyone of any age is raped. That makes me feel sicker and more uncomfortable than just about anything else I can see in a movie. I watched The Accused a long time ago, and that rape scene is so unpleasantly forever stuck in my memory. I just don't want to see certain things because my brain will store that image forever. Plus, I think some perverts get turned on by seeing depictions of rape. That thought makes me feel even sicker.

I can't imagine letting one's well-underage child be in a movie where there is a scene where his/her character is raped. Even if they weren't actually used for the filming of the scene.

Thats right, she CHOSE the script, Knew what it was about, and probably did it to enlighten people about Child Abuse, and boost her Oscar Career! KUDOs to Dakota, she is a very Smart Actress, very similar to Jodie Foster, who to me, is an outstanding actress! :thumbsup2
