D23 - Two New Shows for the Wish

I thought I had read(a long time ago) that they were doing Aladdin on the Wish?? Not sure why I thought that, but glad it will be Little Mermaid.

New pirate show info just came out as well
Sidebar anyone want to play guess what IP will be featured along with Minnie & Goofy for Seas the Adventure?

I love the Little Mermaid, but I never think it works well on stage. The Broadway version, or other non-Disney versions of the story, there is always an issue with recreating the swimming. No matter how hard they try, theater is not the medium for under water scenes.

The music screams 'I am a musical' or 'I am theater!', but the subject it not really suited for this medium.

The Broadway had the issue that they tried to make Ursula a comical character and her costume, while beautiful restricted her from being scary as she could never could get close to Ariel.

You don't have to guess. From The DCL Blog:

  • Tiana will teach Goofy the power of hard work to make a dream come true during a lively performance of “Almost There” from Disney Animation’s “The Princess and the Frog.”
  • Goofy will navigate to the big ocean blue where Crush and Squirt — the tubular turtles from Pixar’s “Finding Nemo” — show him how to “Go with the Flow” in a high-energy production of the song fans will recognize from “Finding Nemo – The Musical” at Disney’s Animal Kingdom
  • In an original arrangement exclusive to this show, heroines Elsa, Moana and Merida will perform a powerful medley of “Let it Go,” “How Far I’ll Go” and “Touch the Sky,” emboldening Goofy to go into the unknown.
  • When Goofy loses his way and self-doubt takes hold once again, he’ll gain the courage to “Go the Distance” with the help of Hercules and a host of heroes from a variety of Disney films.

Additionally, Seas The Adventure will always be the 1st night show, and will culminate into some form of lobby party/show/meet and greet post-show.

"culminating in a cavalcade of characters joining Captain Minnie and Goofy on stage during a grand farewell before leading guests out of the theater and into the Grand Hall for an unforgettable sendoff experience"

So.. sit in the back for an easy getaway? :scratchin

It would take a bit to get an entire theatre full of people relocated...

The Japanese staging was really good (and far better than Broadway IMO). They used a lot more wire work (no roller blades from what I remember, thank god) and the costume designs gave the feel of being under water more. So it can be done, and I’d hope DCL might pull from that as it’s got a reputation for being the superior version. (Have a look at ‘Shiki Little Mermaid’ on YouTube for clips if you’re interested). There were some other changes too, I believe, but I’m more familiar with Shiki’s version (have only seen a recording of Broadway) so can’t fully remember them all.

You don't have to guess. From The DCL Blog:
This sounds great, really happy to see both PatF and Hercules included as they’re two of my favourites.

The Elsa/Moana/Merida medley sounds like it could be similar to the Ariel/Rapunzel/Merida section in ‘Mickey and the Wondrous Book’ at HKDL:

That's exactly how I picture the trio to do it. One of the best moments of Mickey and the Wondrous Book. Which is a great show anyway.

I don't really remember the Little Mermaid show from Disneyland Tokyo. They do a lot of the aerial work above the audience, right?

The Disney Sea show has aerial wire work too but is it’s own show with a different story. Shiki is a Japanese theatre company that stages many Broadway shows and usually has the rights to Japanese stagings of Disney shows - it’s the latter I was referring to although the Disney Sea show is great for what it is too :)

I took a look at the Shiki version but I don’t see all that constant wire movement happening on a rocking ship!

I’m looking forward to it but I sure they had chosen a different protagonist than goofy for the seas show. Going to be hard to get in the mood of an emotional ballad like go the distance when it is goofy they are singing about!
