We had a playlist on our Ipod that started with the song we wanted and had one of the groomsmen change it over. I think our planner announced it, but we had a small group, so when he told us it was time and we walked over, it was a bit obvious. He also showed us how and where to cut the cake.
I actually announced it. We ate, then mingled and then did our first dance. After our first dance I spoke (John spoke at the rehearsal dinner) while we were standing at the cake and then we cut the cake. We had an ipod and my planner stood at the ipod and cut it down while we cut the cake and then turned it back up while it was being served and everyone was eating.
At a wedding with a DJ they would make those annoncement for your of course. As you are having an iPod I assume that you will have someone at your wedding operating it for you. If that person could not make the announcements then you could always ask a trusted family member or friend to take on a special role at your wedding as the Master of Ceremonies especially if they do not have another role. Disney also has Major Domo or and English Butler who you might consider paying for to be at your wedding reception to act as the MC.
We had a DJ so he announced everything for us. It was a great way to not have to worry about anything. My planner, Randy Chapman, and the DJ were wedding pros! They knew when, where and how to do everything.
