Hello all,

I've been trying to navigate the US Customs website, and can't seem to find the duty charged on liquor in excess of the 1 liter per person we are allowed to bring back. The link on page 190 in the Passporter DCL Guide goes to a defunct page.

Can anyone provide me with a list, or know where to find out the specific charges? I'm trying to figure out if it's worthwhile to bring back an extra bottle or two and just pay the duty on it.

PS - We changed our cruise dates, and will now be on the Mousefest Cruise, Cat 6. Hope to see some of you there.

Take care,

Bill

I can't remember the exact charge..I just know it is minimal.
Very little if anything at all.

If you are under a certain dollar amount of overages they still don't make you pay. We found it to be well worth it to purchase liquor, especially hubbys scotch..lol.

I was honest on my customs sheet that we had enough rum that we were over our per adult limit. But the customs agent looked at it and I guess figured it wasn't worth charging me on 1000 ml of rum. We also bought some good jewelry on the trip but had receipts and we were under the limit there and they didn't bother to even check my receipts.

I bought the limit and then three extra bottles. The duty is 10% of the cost you paid. In my case is was three bottles of vodka at $9.00. They were not going to charge me the $2.70 surcharge. He signed my customs form that morning and said I was all set. It is my understanding that is you owe $10.00 or less they will not charge you. However do be sure to stop off in that early AM so they can sign your form. Or ELSE the fines are very steep!

We were on the 8/28 Western and had purchased 20 bottles of liquor, half of it was flavored rum which is not included in your limit, so, by the time we separated the ones that were duty free and what was not, we paid duty for 8 liters and it came to a little over $21 which made it roughly $2.65 or $2.70 a liter....hope this helps some .... Hello all,

Thanks for the replies. That is exactly the information I was looking for. I guess if we buy an extra bottle or two we won't get socked with a huge duty, which is what I was worried about.

Take care,

Bill

I brought 9 bottles home last year on my Navigator Cruise and 4 bottles home from the 8/28 Magic and didnt pay anything for either of them.... I was told by customs they dont collect anything under $10.

the website is very difficult to understand. We asked a half dozen different people, and got a half dozen different answers! DH and I decided that we were going to go ahead and buy whatever looked interesting to us because as long as you don't look like you intend to distribute, the duty is extremely minimal. We did end up getting stopped coming back through customs. Even from the customs agent we did not get a straight answer how the duty is figured. They wouldn't let us determine that we were within the limits if you figured by mL/liters. They just wanted to know how many bottles we had. Sadly, many of our bottles were not full liters. At any rate, we had 24 bottles, and our duty was $17. Definitely worth it....we could not have purchased what we did here at home for that...and we got some really neat stuff that you just can't find here in the states.
