Apologies if this has been covered a lot but I haven't been keeping up with all the latest cancellation policies regarding points.

We have a trip currently scheduled for March 10th. We are beginning to do the calculations to see if we really are comfortable traveling at this time. We for sure want to cancel more than 30 days out since we don't want any points to go into holding. The points we have used for the booking are a combination of banked, current and borrowed points from 2019, 2020 & 2021. We have an October Use Year so we will hopefully be able to use at least some of the points still this year. Are borrowed points still being returned to their former Use Year or are they done with that? Basically, should we make sure to come up with a plan to make sure we don't lose any points?

Thanks for any info or advice!

As of today, the temporary policy of borrowed points being returned and the waiving of holding are being waived,

That can change at any time but it has been reported DVC will notify people when they do....but that doesn’t mean you will get much notice.

So, IMO, cancel sooner rather than later if you want those 2021 points to go back, the only ones left to use or lose...other than depositing in RCI...would be the banked 2019.

Is the current policy still to put points into holding if we cancel less than 30 days out? Not saying we are going to do that just want to understand the current situation.

I understand that this could change at any time. I appreciate the reminder about that!

Holding still being waived.

Also be aware of some mechanics involved with those borrowed points. Borrowed points will be returned to original use year only for cancelled reservations, not for any reservation you just choose to modify. Moreover, you have to wait usually a week or so after cancellation before the borrowed points are actually returned to original use year, and until that occurs they remain borrowed points, so any attempt to cancel and then quickly make a new reservation using the points will result in the points still being treated as borrowed points.

Right. Thanks for pointing that out! I do recall now that when we cancelled our trip way back in April that it was a good week or so before they went to the right bucket.

Sigh. Didn't think I'd still be looking at cancelling trips a year later. :(

Do you know if the points that were borrowed and then returned due to cancel reservations will still be eligible to be banked for that use year?

Yes, they return to their original use year and then follow the same rules as other use year points, including that they can be banked by end of 8th month of use year, or can even be borrowed again but limited to the current covid-related 50% per contract rule.

Thank you very much!

Sadly we decided last night that we just weren't ready. I really want to get back but it's not worth it if it's just fully of anxiety and nervousness. I think I was leaning yes, but my wife was leaning no, so we went that direction. :(

I ended up modifying my original trip to a June one, could only get half the days, this time at Bay Lake Tower. But I was then able to get Polynesian for the other half for the exact amount of points I had left. So that worked out! Something to look forward to! But getting tired of rescheduling this trip!

Well, good to keep the wife happy, for us, we are comfortable going knowing all of the measures in place on both the plane and in the parks and honestly, we just can't go on hiding in fear. We have come to accept that life has certain risks, but everyone needs to decide for themselves what they are comfortable with and act accordingly.

I agree. I don't judge anyone who has decided to go. We are close, I think it's worry that would ruin our trip. Anxiety is very personal and hard to control, I know that's how my wife is and I want to have a good trip!

have a great time on yours! I hope our time comes soon enough!
