Is there anyone out there whose hair started to turn curly during puberty?

My DH has curly hair, my DD11 has always had straight but thick hair. Now, she is getting spring like curls just appearing out of all the other straight hair. It's impossibly to do anything with. Questions:

1. Does the rest of it ever become curly also? Or will she forever have this mix of straight hair and spring curls sticking out of it?

2. What is the best flat iron that is NOT $100 that I can use in the meantime?

Thanks, from a straighthaired mom!

My hair was really curly and dark when I was a toddler. By the time I was 8 or 9, it was straight and very blonde. When I hit puberty, it got more wavy and dirty blonde. It's still dirty blonde now, but it's starting to get more curly.

I have no advice about straighteners. I've used less expensive ones and have gotten terrible results. My hair curls back up after I straighten it, even with hair spray. I just don't bother.

When my friend hit puberty, her hair went from stick straight and shiney to wavy and course. Crazy!

You can get a Chi for $70 online. Gotta pay for the good stuff!

Yes..I had brown wavy hair as a kid and around 12 or 13 it turned into tight spiral curls (gradually - I mean it didn't happen over night) and stayed that away until well into my late 20's when I started having hormone level issues - and now as a pregnant almost 40 year old it is very very straight.

I can offer no advice on a straight iron - maybe she can embrace an updo...like a messy bun look - where the two different hair textures won't seem so out of place/obvious.

I'm sure you will get lots of advice from younger/hipper than I....:rotfl:

My nephew had this very thin, very fine baby hair as a child - straight as could be. Now as a grown man he has very thick, very very curly (think blonde afro) hair. I lived far away when he was in his teen so I'm not sure of the progression.

My hair was straight, straight straight all my life until menopause. Now if I let it dry naturally it was lots of pretty tight waves. Almost looks like I crimped it. But the top hair (what would be bangs if I had them) is straight as a stick.

I was born with thin straight hair. When I hit middle school it turned into thin curly hair . Go figure.

I use a maxiglide for the days I feel like having straight hair. Had it about 5 years , love love love it!!! Tried cheaper versions , yuck!

Make sure you use a product to help condition with use of heavy heat.

That looks cool! I do use the Nexus Heatprotex when we straighten it. So did your hair eventually get curly all over, or just parts?

Yes, it can change. No telling if it might change back. I do think hormones relate. Two of my DSis had bone straight hair prior to puberty. Gorgeous waves after. One keeps getting curlier with age. My hair has also been curly, but went pretty straight and lackluster while pregnant.
My daughter had very THIN hair up until about age 10. Now her ponytails are easily twice as thick as mine. (I'm soooo jealous)

I've always had super curly, thick hair which can be VERY unmanageable at times. I find that using moisturizing shampoo and conditioner helps a lot. I use Revlon's Perfect Heat Ceramic Straightener and my hair stays straight. I got it for about 12.99 at TJ Maxx, but have seen it at Target for around $30.

I had pretty straight hair when I was little with just a wave at the bottom and at one point it did become curly probably around the time of puberty. My older sister and mother have curly hair though in case it is from genetics. My dd10 has alopecia areata. At one point she had lost about 60% of her hair which had been fairly straight. It started growing back around age 8 and grew back in all curly. I don't know for sure if puberty hormones had already started, it is from genetics, or is what happens if you loose your hair and it grows back. My dd6 had straight hair with a tiny wave at the bottom like mine so it will be interesting to see what happens in a few years.

Very common! And again, it'll change again during menopause! Ain't life grand?! lol

If you have a TJMaxx, go get a Biosilk Flat Iron there. 39.99 and they are made by the same company who makes CHI (Farouk). Sometimes they have Babyliss ones there and I've used them also and was please with the results I got. :) As a hairdresser, if I find a steal of a deal at TJMaxx, I take it!! They often beat the prices I can get things for!

curly all over, had to find a great hair dresser. Can't cut the layers to short or let them grow out to long. Takes years to learn to love your curls , but one day it does happen.

I had straight hair with a slight wave until I was pregnant with our twins, now it is pretty curly-not poodle curly but curly. DS15 had super straight, fine hair that has gotten curlier as he has gotten older. It is more curly at the bottom, straighter near the scalp if that makes sense. It has been really curly this summer with the humidity.

I was born with curly reddish/blond hair. I now have very dark brown wavy hair. I can make it curly, but I have to scrunch it up as I blow dry it. Although, with this humidity, my hair will curl all on it's own. I think our hair naturally changes as we get older.

Growing up, I had "sort-of wavy hair." Just a slight wave, but I needed a perm back in the 80s.

10 years ago I had major surgery, and suddenly, the back and sides of my hair went curly. It hasn't changed. However, the top of my hair is still stick-straight and extremly fine. No volume whatsoever, won't hold a curl...

Sorry, no advice about a straightener. That doesn't help me - one little bit of humidity and the curl is back (thankfully, I don't frizz).

My niece is 12 and in the last year her hair has gotten sooooo curly!
