Curious how this works..

We arrive at Orlando airport at 8:30, and are using Disney Transportation to go to the resort. How does that work? How long will it take us to get picked up at the airport, and to get from the airport to the resort?

Secondly, how long does Disney transportation run at night? Would it be possible to check in and then go look at some of the other decorations at the resorts?

Magical Express will pick you up from the airport and take you to your resort. Depending on where you are staying, you may have to stop at other resorts as well, your stop could be first, second or third. I would plan on it taking about 45 minutes up to an hour and a half.
Disney buses run late. They run up to two hours (I believe) after parks close. The buses to DTD run later..I'm not sure on those times. IF you are going to other resorts for decorations you are going to need to go to a park first or to Downtown since there are no buses that run directly from resort to resort.

It really depends on how lucky you are getting to the airport at "just" the right time!! Sometimes you only have to wait a very short time for Magical Express. Other times you have to wait for some time (but probably not more than 1/2 an hour or so). The trip from the airport to Disney property is about 30-35 minutes, but when you get to your resort really depends on how many stops they make at OTHER resorts as well. You might be first, you might be last, you might be the ONLY resort they stop at. So, that can delay you as well.

As far as Disney transportation on property, it runs at least an hour (maybe 2?) after any specific park closes (I've never tested it). You will need to get a bus from one of the parks or Downtown Disney though as there are no resort to resort buses. Have a GREAT time!! I'm sure you will be hooked forever.

Just a heads up. Once a park is closed, buses only take people out and will not pick up at resorts to go to the parks. So if you're at a resort and plan to take the bus to a park to transfer to your resort and that park is closed even though you're within the 2 hour window, you'll have to pick another park that isn't closed or transfer at DTD.
