HELP How do we cure my son's foot odor???

he recently returned from a two week hiking trip. His boots stink. His sneakers stink. I get that. He's been home for two days - bathed 1st day & showered the second. He swears he washed his feet with soap - he's 16, you have to specify. He removed his shoes in the car today & his feet still reek! He was wearing dress shoes & socks which were no where near his hiking trip. It's definitely trapped in his feet.
Is there anything to get rid of that stench???

Dr. Scholls foot odor spray. He needs to use it everytime he puts a pair of shoes on

Have you looked at his feet-does he have any kind of an infection, fungus, etc.? What about his toe nails? Did he wear his tennis shoes or boots before he put on his dress shoes?

Antibacterial soap, dry them really well before putting on socks. Only natural materials for socks . My DS22 used foot powder and I always had him 2 or 3 pairs of tennis shoes to switch out. He seems to have grown out of it, but when he was a teenager, GROSSSS!!!!!

A light sprinkle of baking soda in the shoes will work too.

Philmont?? My DS16, DS14 and DH are there now! I'm not looking forward to the stench!

One year one of the boys went to camp for a week and took a shower the first night, and never again. He reeked when he got home. It took a few days and many showers/baths to go away. But it did go away. Have him use bar soap, like Irish Spring and soap good between the toes. Always wear socks in his shoes. I think it will improve over the days!

Let those feet breathe!

Have him wear flip-flops as much as possible. Shoes and socks trap moisture & bacteria which then cause the odor --especially during the summer.

This sounds like it goes beyond stinky sweaty feet...

I know somebody who had to get Betadine, I think it was. This was not recent... so there might be something different.

Boots might have to be retired for a while, treated....

Totally disinfect all socks....
If not possible with hot water and clorox, just get new socks....

There should be lots of info on foot issues/infections online.
Of course regular fungal infections itch, burn, peel, more than they stink.
But there are other infection possibilities.

Do not assume an anti-fungal or deodorant foot-spray will do it.

On mythbusters they did a vodka foot bath! It actually worked. I have also read that listerine will work, probably since it's also got lots of alcohol in it!

Fill a dish pan 1/2 way with water and a cup of white vinegar. Have your son soak in it for about 1/2 hr and then air dry his feet. Try stuffing his shoes with wadded up newspaper and leave it there overnight. I read that in Heloise one time. I don't know if it'll work but it can't hurt.

Awww, PHILMONT, is that where your DS was? My DS has been a RANGER many many years at Philmont. This is his first summer not there and is very sad about it. He is in law school and has a law internship for the summer. He needed to get a "real" job and move on with his life from all this camping, hiking and backpacking he has done for years. :lmao:

Anyway, what DS does when he gets home from Philmont is gets himself a SPA PEDICURE at the Spa I go to. They tech's there do an amazing job. :thumbsup2

We air out his boots and stuff with BOUNCE dryer sheets.

Anti-Monkey Butt? I always sent that to my brother while in Iraq to put in his boots for odor... although I think it's sort of preventative.

I read online that to get the smell out of shoes, get a pan of kitty litter and stick the shoes in it upside down - so the opening is down in the litter and the soles are up. Put it all in a plastic bag for a couple days.

They sell those disposable kitty litter boxes in Petco and PetSmart for like $3.00 … thats a GREAT idea! :thumbsup2

YEP! We have Philmont to thank for the stinky feet. I made him sit on the porch with each foot in a 5 gallon bucket with water, epson salt & lemon juice. It made a HUGE difference. They are headed to Northern Tier this week with OA - I can't imagine what surprises will be in store when they return from that trek.

Uh, just the thought. :scared1:

Bacteria get below the surface of the skin and are responsible for the odor. Repeated applications of Hibiclens soap will cure the problem as it gets below the skin as well. I'm not sure if you can get it OTC but your doctor can give you a prescription for it. (It is used before surgical procedures.)

Then he should wear socks with all closed shoes thereafter.

Glad it worked! I got to talk to my sons tonight! They are in base camp, heading home tomorrow! They are ready for solid food. Im ready for them, and DH to be home, stink and all!

For stinky shoes and feet try soaking them in hot water and efferdent. I use 2 or 3 tablets in a bucket of water to get rid of the stench my DD ends up with on her soccer shin gaurds. Works like a charm - kills the bacteria.

Throw out the boots, shoes and socks. Soak the feet in diluted vodka-seriously. You HAVE to get rid of the footwear-all of it. I know you don't want to hear that. I've been through this with my husband. If you let him infect his other shoes, you'll have to throw those out too. Good luck. Baking soda does not work, don't waste your time.

It's always good to hear from them when they return to base camp. I hope they had a great trek!

Soak feet in a bucket of warm water with a few tea bags. This is what Dr.Oz recommends.
