Cure For Sea Sickness??

I am very prone to motion sickness. I even get nauseous after snorkeling for 15 minutes and walking on the treadmill for more than 20 min! I also got very sick on a Royal Caribbean cruise back in 1983 (lost 5 lbs!) so I didn't want to go on the Disney cruise! But my DH convinced me to go and we were on the Disney Cruise to Mexico last month w/ our DS5 and DS7. I read these boards for help and it saved my life! I was told to take 1 Vitamin B complex in the morning w/ breakfast (this is to help your nervous system). Then take a 550 mg Ginger tab (found at any health food or vitamin store) at Lunch and again at dinner. I also took Meclazine once a day. (Meclazine is in the same family of Bonine and Dramamine but I was told that it is slightly different). I'm not sure if it was the meclazine or Ginger that worked but I kept doing what I was doing and it was a miracle! We even hit the edge of hurricane Emily and were in 12 ft waves and I still didn't get sick. (A lot of other passengers did though and the Disney Crew said that the waves were the biggest that they've ever experienced in the Mexican Rivera! Some of the crew were even seasick! You knew it was going to bad when the crew were handing out barf bags onboard!) My DH is so excited that I can cruise that now he wants to book our next cruise already! My DS7 also gets very motion sickness and I gave him half a tablet of Bonine everyday. He was fine the whole week! Hope this helps you all! Happy cruising!

I don't suffer from any motion sickness other than seasickness. And let me tell you, I am very sensitive to water motion (feel ill after 30 minutes in the ocean if there's any surf at all).
I put the patch on early in the morning before we even got on the plane, and replaced the patch once in the middle of the cruise and had no problems at all. In the later part of the evening, I did feel some drowsiness, but that was about it for side effects.

OK...here's another update on my ankle. It's just a bad sprain. Yea! In fact, the doctor had me walking today in his office. I told him we were going to Disneyworld in 17 days, he said I would do just fine. I have exercises, he said to do them everyday, keep taking Advil for the anti-inflammatory benefits and in 2 weeks, I should be good enough for Disney. He said I will probably get tired in the evenings and then just revert to my current treatment of ice and advil before bed. And if I have to, I'll make some appointments for a spa pedicure and have someone rub my feet every other day. How awful would that be?? :cloud9: I'm so happy it wasn't worse. Our volleyball season starts up again in 5 weeks and I'll even be better by then. It's a happy day!

A quick question for anyone who knows the answer....
What's the difference between Dramamine and Bonine? Is it the same thing? I have already purchased the Dramamine and I want to have all of the remedies everyone has discussed here to have an arsenal of tricks up my sleeves. But if they are the same, then I will save myself the money and not double up. If you know..please help.
I'm probably going through all of this and worrying about my "little arsenal" and she will probably be just fine!
I'll keep my fingers crossed! Thanks Everyone!!! :grouphug:

A friend went on a cruise and felt a little seasick, looked a little pale/greenish. Another passenger went up to her and said "eat green apples, any type of green skinned apples". So she did. Her husband said he could see her color improving as she ate it. She was fine after that. She had never been on a cruise before so had no idea she'd get sick. Now she swears by the green apples. She ate many. Hope this helps someone.

If you have the original Dramamine (labeled OK for kids) it contains Dimenhydrinate. Bonine (and Dramamine II or the "less drowsy" formula) contain meclizine, which for our family works much better. Not technically labeled for children under 12 but ask your pediatrician. Mine ok'd it when ds was about 6 or 7 for half a tablet and it works! I am not big on medicating but in this case it has made a huge difference in comfort for us. A green person is not a happy person! :rotfl:

You could try getting a prescription from your doctor. Most of the time they will prescribe Scolopine patches for motion sickness. They work great, believe me I am a nurse and I have used them and never had any trouble with them.

Hope you find a cure.

Are the Scolopine patches only available with a prescription? Do you think her doctor will send in a prescription without "seeing" her?

I guess it all depends on your MD. If you call his/her nurse they might give you the prescription without seeing you.

I was told by my doctor if dd (7) gets seasick that i could cut one of the patches into quarters and just use a quarter of the patch. Then she also said that the patch may cause drowsiness. I will use the patch and still keep my ginger pills close by, just in case the patch cause to much drowsiness.
I also want to remind you that all these meds and over the counter items are a preventive. by waiting to take the meds after on set of seasickness or motion sickness may not help the naussa. If seasick starts try also chewing gum or taking a nap until you see if the meds are going to help. I tell everyone about the giner pills because they do work without the drowsiness.

We cruised on the Magic last Sept during Hurricane Jeanne. My DD (7 at the time) got seasick during our character breakfast (the thursday we were outrunning Jeanne). I had brought dramamine but silly me wasn't thinking about her swallowing a pill so we had to go to plan "B". The wristy things. Out head waiter was awesome and even offered dramamine pills and I believe they were available outside the infirmary. Anyway one of the stores carried the sea band things. They fit her fine and worked wonderfully! So I would recommend them also.

I have heard this one:

550 mg ginger root caps w/a vitamin B complex.

When we went on our first DCL cruise two years ago, I could feel the ship moving even when we were in the dock! My DH (who was in the Navy) told me I was crazy and the ship wasn't moving....sure enough, I was green after the first course at dinner. Our table mates, experienced cruisers, asked the wait staff to bring me an apple and it really did help to settle my stomach. I also took a lot of Dramamine, the "less drowsy" formula, but still ended up sleeping through most of one day of the 4-night cruise from the meds. :(

This past year we went to Hawaii and decided to do several short 2-4 hour whale watch cruises. I was very scared of getting sick, but tried ginger pills and I never once felt sick, even when the water was very choppy and others were green.

So I swear by apples and ginger now! :)
