It was announced today that education budgets throughout the state would get huge increases over the next few years from the State of Connecticut. In theory, a great idea. Of course the $ has to come from somewhere, right? It will partially come from higher taxes on cigarettes (I'm so glad I quit smoking 20 years ago) but a big chunk will be higher income taxes. I am seriously thinking I can't afford to live here anymore.:sad2: They're taxing us right out of the state!

Can YOU believe this? I have never been a big fan of Jody Rell because I have always had the feeling that she wanted to be "popular" and "get along" with the democrats. I thought she was out of her mind a couple of years ago when she wanted to give school kids LAPTOPS! THIS tax increase has even shocked the Democrats. I have a call into the house Republicans, not that they can help. She is as bad if not worse that Lowell Weicker. No wonder Ct. is a state where the population isn't growing. I voted for her because the alternatives seemed so much worse. Its apparent that they weren't that much worse!

I agree. Eventually I'll have to leave too. Good thing I don't have children or family here.

I have all my family here and one child still in the public school system.

Dawn--the funny part is, I kind of liked Jodi Rell. Now, not so much.

Oh, and lest I forget. Are they seriously thinking about bringing back tolls? I-95 isn't a nightmare enough?

My parents made a move when I was still school age and it was hard on me. It's definitely not an easy decision to make.

oh wait......dont move to Maine cause when they dont want to say they are taxing us to death they do the fee thing.......we now are being taxed....oh I mean fee for rain tax......when the rain falls off our roof it goes into the drain....so now we are fee'd on how big our square footage is of our home......how about that?

Is this the same as the sewer usage fee? We already have that, too.

oh no the water bill and sewage bill are regular bills that come three times a year....so if I use water they figure it has to go somewhere......but they were kind and let us have a summer water discount so we can water our gardens or fill the pools up......doesnt amount to jack ...........

I wish they whole universal pre-school would go away...and I was a teacher! Can we just let parents pay for pre-school?

Explain to me the healthcare thing. She's suggesting newborns get free healthcare for the first two months under the Husky plan. Does that mean the Husky plan will still exist? Now there's a plan ($3 prescription co-pay; $2 doctor's office co-pay) that makes me wonder why we work for our money and benefits!

Taxes were one of the reasons that we left the state. Come to Arizona, taxes are low, the weather is better and I'm a realtor who is ready to sell you a house!:rotfl:

Before you all go crazy about the laptops, the in thing here is the smartboard. Somehow, my kids' school is just absolutely convinced that they can't teach without smartboards. Whatever happened to chalk and erasers?

Smartboard?? Explain...

They seem like overhead projectors from our day. I'm not sure what exactly the pros are to them, but every teacher I know including DH LOVES them.

I don't think the excess is with school supplies (DH spends a lot of his own money on supplies). I just think that preschool is going to be another expensive mandate that the schools can't handle - more kids, more teachers, more rooms being used up in already overcrowded schools.

Slam me if you want for this. I know the HUSKY plan was created for uninsured children, but it's too the point that it awards irresponsible behavior on the parent's part.

Minnesota taxes are higher then CT's. I have lived in states where the tax burden is pretty low and I will gladly pay the taxes for the high quality schools, services, etc. we get. Alaska has the lowest tax burden but everything costs so much more there it is probably the most expensive state in which to live?

Smartboard?? Explain...

It is an interactive projector board. Kind of a cross between a chalk board and computer. The teacher can put notes up on screen and tap the notes on the board and it responds with more info, etc. It certainly makes the teacher's job easier, but it is not some wonderful textbook that actually teaches the kids something new.

I'm from NJ so I feel your pain. Highest taxes in the Nation.
