Not sure of protocol here, but according to today's WDW park update on the rumor site that shall remain nameless (but has the initials MP), the work at the Contemporary's North Garden Wing appears to be asbestos abatement for future demolition.

Now I've worked in buildings where renovation work took place and abatement was required before any actual renovation work could begin, so this could be just the first step of the renovation process and not a prequel to a complete demo.

But...if a complete demo is to follow abatement, land work could follow that, with a likely construction timeline readying Phase 1 of the Contemporary Resort Villas for Fall 2009, 6 months after the Animal Kingdom Lodge Villas project is completed in Spring 2009.

Hey, a guy can dream, can't he?

:stir:

Regards

Thanks for sharing but we have discussed this in great detail right here on the DIS, on the resorts forums and DVC. I was the first to share that I was told by friends that work for Disney about the asbestos removal.

Several others stated that they would have to deal with that before rehabbing or tearing the building down. So as you said, it could be just that they are getting reading to rehab the rooms as they did the South Wing, or they could take the building down for DVC.

So your dream is very likely to come true. :thumbsup2

I've missed any previous posts about asbestos abatement but to me it does sound hopeful for CRV. :thumbsup2

I don't remember reading of any abatement for the South wing and am rather sure the wing wasn't fenced off like the North is. Why would the North wing need abatement if the South wing did not?

For my speculation about asbestos abatement, see the thread Contemporary "Demolition" permit filed at the DIS Disney Rumors and News board.

The point is that a simple refresh of room decor would not require asbestos abatement (as long as the asbestos remains undisturbed behind walls or between the ceiling and the next floor up).

Asbestos abatement would be the precursor to something major, such as complete demolition of the North Garden Wing or completely gutting the interior and rebuilding it. Frankly, I don't see the point of gutting and rebuilding if the North Garden Wing will remain a wing with conventional hotel rooms.

If I were a betting man, I'd bet on demolition and building something new — most likely a DVC resort.

I have 2 Honda CRV's and will buy another when my daughter turns 16. I hope they aren't dead.

Due to the damage from hurricanes the repairs that were needed were much more extensive. This is not to say there was not abatement done for the South Wing, we just did not discuss the rehab in great detail due to the fact there was very little interest in it other than on the Resort forum by guests planning future trips.

Their was damage to the ceiling and roof on the North Wing from hurricanes that did not occur on the South Wing.

Thanks for the links, Horace and Sammie.

I agree with you, Horace. Time will tell but it looks like CRV to me.

Sammie, I even posted on your link! :rotfl2: Just didn't pay much attention to your asbestos comment since I was reading for recent activity at CR. But I do wonder if that info is a red herring. Even if the roof had more damage than the South wing, any damage at all would seem to require the same type of work and therefore the same precautions.

you don't know how much I want a CRV too

but remember there were complaints last year of the holes in the walls at Cont North wing.

there were several rooms - where the walls will have to come down.

so this could still be a rehab. Hope not!!!

there is also that other rumor - that yes a new building but it will Con family suites and not a DVC.

but in this case I would believe DVC first.

It is cheaper for Disney to build a DVC than to gamble on Cont family suites.

I really don't think anyone wanting CRV has any concerns other than waiting.

No one at Disney that I am friends with will say when it is going to happen or details but they also won't say it's not going to happen either.

So I would say waiting will be hard part but I truly think it will come. :thumbsup2

I agree Sammie :thumbsup2 I think DVC is right on track with CRV and it will come.

With the exception of those Disney people who are directly involved with future DVC resorts, Disney cast members (including managers) don't know any more than people on this board. They hear rumors from each other; we hear rumors from each other. They hear rumors from us; we hear rumors from them.

The official internal story at WDW is that the North Garden Wing is being refurbished. The unofficial story is that the North Garden Wing will be flattened to make way for a new DVC resort.

I've run into cast members who "know" that a DVC resort will rise adjacent to the Contemporary. Presumably, they heard it from someone who "knows" it to be a fact. And they heard it from... You get the idea.

The rumor is logical. There's all sorts of evidence — including the public filing for the staging area for the "DVC @ Contemporary" and the architect's design that appeared and quickly disappeared on the Internet.

On the other hand, DVD is now building a rather large DVC resort at the AKL, and, in recent years, DVD has been reluctant to have multiple DVC resort in active sales simultaneously. Of course, high-rise resorts take a long time to build, especially if the site is currently occupied by a building that may need asbestos abatement.

Hee.......
But soon you might be able to have a Disney CRV, too, and it'll last even longer than a Honda! :rotfl:

Sammie's connections have been reliable in the past, so I am willing to bet that it is a waiting game at this point. Although I did not like the "C" building that we have all seen, I sure would like to see DVC at the CR!!!

My contact still says that DVC and Resorts are still "discussing". Looking to be more like a rebuild to accommodate Contemporary resort family suites (which does require an internal tear down...and asbestos removal). Possible that DVC may get a part of it. Stay tuned.

spiceycat and nuts, where have you seen info about family suites at CR?

I am glad your 2 Honda CR-V are still alive since I bought my first one earlier this year after much research and thought. I really like it though and would buy another one! I see you are already planning to purchase your third!
