Crutches?

Somewhat strange question-

Due to a recent injury, i am currently wearing an ankle splint and walking with crutches. I'll have to do this the next several months. I've gotten pretty good with the crutches! In march, i'm taking a quick trip to WDW. Ny question is- how would you handle crutches with rides? Ie, where would onw store them while on space mountain? I prefer not to go the wheelchair route because the person going with me can't physically push me due to her own health issues, and ecv's are a bit pricey. I don't mind the crutches- just trying to figure out the logistics...

Thanks

I am afraid you may have to go to using an ECV. Are you aware that once around the World Showcase Lagoon Promenade is over 1.25 miles. Most people walk about eight miles a day at WDW.

And if you need the crutches 100%, if you rent qan ECV from offsite they can install a set of crutch holders for you which will make the driving much easier.

Check the "disABILTIES! FAQ" for more information about rental sources.

I agree that the walking might be too much for you. It doesn't sound like that much before you go, but is is a long way to get from place to place in the parks. I've heard estimates of between 3 and 9 miles pers day.
Most of the attractions don't have anywhere to sit while you wait, so getting a rest that way may not be available.

I'd suggest even if you don't think you need it, take the phone numbers along for the offisite places to rent ECVs. That way, if you find you do need one, at least you will have the numbers.

If you do have the crutches with you when boarding, you will either be able to bring the crutches with you into the ride car or the CM will take them from you after you board. There is a link to a thread in the disABILITIES FAQs thread that has information about boarding attractions (especially those with moving walkways).

I am particulary prone to injuries and have visited WDW many times while using crutches. Each time, I rent a wheelchair (it's worth it, trust me) and check my crutches at guest services. This makes it easier to manuever around without worring about them. Of course, if you wanted to keep them on you, they will happily install crutch holders!
HTH!

I second the idea of bringing the numbers of the offsite ecv rental agencies with you if you decide before the trip to go without an ecv rental.

I guess, how are you when you go out to the mall and shop for 3-4 hours and are on your feet constantly? Are you on your feet all day during the day?

I would think if you have an ankle problem, after several hours of being in the park. Standing in line, and using your crutches to get around from ride to ride, your ankle is going to be throbbing.

Good luck in your decision.

perhaps you both should consider ecv rentals, it sure makes it easier on your body, if you aren't hurting, or used up all your strength the 1st day just getting around the parks and resort.

Thank you al for your suggestions.

Just back from WDW. My mom ended up joining the trip at the last minute...so I spent half the time using my crutches and the other half with my mom pushing me in a wheel chair. I could have managed without the chair, I think, but several times I nearly got pushed over by small childre with those wheel shoe things- and it was getting irritating.

Overal great trip with small exception of some latex allergy issues. I waited 20 minutes for space mountain, only to see the CM checking lapbars wearing Latex gloves as she did so. So...long story short, I had to exit instead of ride. Also couldn't eat a meal I ordered at Cosmic Rays after it was handed to my mom by someone wearing gloves.
