I have to take medicine for the next two weeks and the pills are rather like horse pills. I cannot swallow pills at all (side effect of childhood medical issues) and I asked my pharmacist if I could crush them. They told me that I could, so I tried using applesauce to take it. That was horrible. It took me 25 minutes to get the little container down and I threw up once.

Does anyone have ANY suggestions to taking medicine? It's a horribly bitter powder and is frightful to taste.

Thanks! :)

I'm able to swallow pills whole, so I'm not speaking from personal experience. I know, though, that my grandma used to have to take a lot of pills and she would take them with pudding. She wouldn't crush them up, but just take one pill per spoonful of pudding so that it would slide down easier.

Maybe that might help? If I think of anything else, I'll let you know. And good luck!

I have the same problem. Last time I had to take horse pills I too had to crush them. Applesauce didn't have a strong enough flavor so I used ice cream (Moose Tracks to be specific, chocolate fudge and peanut butter :) ) which helped. I used a LARGE serving so that I got more ice cream than medicine per bite plus lots of gulps of water. Good luck!

I agree, try something stronger or sweeter in taste.
Nurses in long term care either use applesauce or pudding for crushed meds.
Pudding for the more "difficult" residents.

Hope you find something that works.

Grape juice is good for cutting bitter flavor. We mix crushed prednisone pills with that at work - it's the only way lots of patients can swallow the nasty stuff.

You can also try ice cream, pudding, peanut butter, anything really. Just don't use too much of it. Chances are, it's still not going to taste great and you don't want to be stuck eating that much.

Thanks! Pudding seems to be an idea that is pretty popular.

Ice cream...hmmmm. good idea. I might try that tmrw. I have carmel which i was debating trying for tmrw....

I can't swallow pills at all. I put the powder in Yoplait yogurt.

Thanks!

Thanks! I might try the grape juice.

I also can not swallow pills... I had one get "stuck" years ago and have never gotten over that feeling - I have a terrible "reflex reaction" now when I've tried

I find putting the crushed pills in food very hard to swallow. You end up having to eat too much of the horrid tasting food

What I do is put it in a large spoon and mix with a strong tasting liquid - strong (extra powder) crysal light lemonade works with the worst tasting best as I'm allergic to fruit juice.

Hope this helps I know how difficult this can be

You might try putting it in coffee also. When people used to poison their spouses, they used the coffee to hide the bitter taste of the toxin (thank you Agatha Christie).

When my son was 4, he had to take medication that didn't come in liquid form. I would crush the pills between 2 spoons and put the powder on frozen yogurt or ice cream. It only took one big spoonful so I didn't feel like I was feeding him too much ice cream during the day. I used vanilla for him but I think for really bitter pills, a strong flavor like chocolate fudge would be best!

When my DD was 4, she needed something that had a horrid taste (sorry can't remember what it was). The nurse said to mix it with chocolate milk. It didn't work "like a charm", but it worked OK - and the medicine went down.

I will also add - DD's medicine at the time was a liquid.

The worst thing ive ever had to take is potassium:scared1::sick:

The pills were crushed up in applesauce and teh liquid was put into apple juice. Both still tasted terrible.

When i was little, my parents woul dput pills into applesauce adn chocolate pudding. To this day I still cannot eat chocolate pudding

If you cut the pill in 1/2, as opposed to crushing it, would you be able to swallow the 2 smaller halves? Then most of the bitterness would probably not be released.

That's what I do with large pills. I cut them into small pieces then I can swallow them.

Braking the pill into 2 or more pieces, using a warm liquid and tilting head back a bit will make it go down much easier. Better alignment and also helps to cut gag reflex, at least for me.

My DD cuts hers as well. The taste of it crushed was horrible for her.

My DD has this problem. She uses chocolate ice cream and just enough to soak up the crushed pill...that way she only has to choke down a small teaspoon of it. Anymore than that and she would throw up.

At first she used peanut butter but then it ruined peanut butter for her.

Good luck, it stinks, I know.

I forgot to mention that I LOVE the pineapple flavored Yoplait yogurt........ALMOST as good as a Dole Whip! ;)

Nothing to add here, but this had me :lmao:
