Crushing Pills...

I'm assuming you've already asked the pharmacist if it comes in a liquid form... or asked your doctor if there's an equivalent drug that comes in a liquid form. Most pharmacies have all kinds of flavors they can add these days to liquid medication.

All good suggestions. In the hospital we will cut, sometimes even fourth pills. Crushing them comes next, and we use applesauce, pudding, or ice cream. Good for you and asking if it can be crushed, because some meds cannot be crushed, so always check with your doctor or pharmacist before crushing :)

If all else fails something else you can consider. Have your pharmacist order empty capsules - crush or cut in small pieces the pills and put in into capsules. Easy to swallow. I had to do it for years when my son couldn't swallow or taste prednisone. The capsules remove any taste which is what made him vomit.

You can even get empty capsules on your own...I know that they sell them at the health food store near me.

We also have a true compounding pharmacy here, and they were able to put something DS had to take into a vegetable-based capsule (we're vegetarian and won't take gelatin-based capsules). If I'd thought about it just a moment longer I would have bought the pills from Walgreens (who says they are a compounding pharmacy but they aren't in any REAL sense of the word) brought them to the compounding place and just paid a small fee to switch the capsules but I didn't think and my insurance doesn't pay ANY pharmacy stuff outside their network.

Anyway, my point is, if there's a true compounding pharmacy near you, you could call them to see if they can help you at all with this problem.

Girl, I totally feel you. I have a horrible aversion to taking pills. I liked the idea of crushing the pill into pudding. :thumbsup2 Don't cut the pill in 1/2 and then try to swallow it, though. I've tried doing that and choked it back up, because it was still too big and the edges were jagged. So if you'd rather swallow your pills, try cutting them into 1/4s. I always take my pills with orange juice, never water. With water I can feel the pill going down my throat and I panic. See how crazy I am? :rotfl:

I did actually ask, because that's typically what I get my pharmacist to do (turn it into a liquid). Unfortunately, I'm on such a high dose of this medicine that I would have to take about a bottle of medicine each does. I would have ended up with 15 bottles? or some insane number like that because my pharmacist looked at doing that for me first.

My ex-boyfriend would crush his pills and mix them with a glass of soda and then drink it.

When I was younger, I couldn't swallow ANY pills, so my Mom used the Applesauce method...I HATE applesauce to this day!:headache: Now, I can swallow 3 advils at once, but the Gloucosimin Pill,,,NO WAY!:confused3

yippee!!! a place where i belong!

when i had dd and had a c-section the nurse had to crush my pain meds and give me orange juice to take them.. hubby said i was being a baby and the nurses thought i was nuts!! but i couldn't do it, just couldn't swallow pills.. i've slowly gotten better and i can take small pills now, no vitamins (those things are humongous!!!!):goodvibes

I had to half adult capsules of tamaflu for DD when she had swine flu. Every pharmacy in town was out of the liquid. The liquid was bad enough the last time she had flu, but the powder was VILE! I used double choclate pudding.

Thanks to everyone who gave suggestions.

I tried the coffee and the strong liquid/spoon thing. Neither really worked, liquid better than the coffee.

How about using capsules?

Add me to the list that can't swallow pills either. I use 2 spoonfuls of chocolate pudding. The first spoon of pudding has the crushed up pill and the second spoon of pudding just helps the medicine taste go down.
