Every time I have dinner at my parents' house, I get into a debate with my dad over crumbs in the butter. He always leaves tons of crumbs in the shared butter, whether it be a tub of margarine or a stick of butter, and I am completely grossed out by this. He seems to think it's no big deal. His take: it's only crumbs, I'm being overly sensitive. My take: it's not MY food that's in there, it could be crumbs of goodness-know-what, it's unsanitary, and it's just plain GROSS. I mean, I don't even leave crumbs in my own butter at home when I'm the only one who is using it!

So what do you think? Is it disgusting to leave crumbs in the butter (or other spreaded condiments) or am do I just need to get over it? Or does it not bother you one way or the other?

ewwwww

EVen worse, DHs family rolls their corn in the cob in shared butter, GROSS!!!!

Its only crumbs. I do not like traces of jelly mixed in the peanut butter jar.

Oh yes, dear ol' Dad does that too... and then doesn't understand why I don't want to put it on my potatoes! :crazy2:

Ugh, that is totally disgusting. And the putting jelly in the peanut butter jar or vice-versa is sickening too!

Gross, gross gross!!

ewwwwww gives me the creeps!!! I'm always yelling at everyone in my house for leaving crumbs!!!! :furious:

So bad here me and DD have a separate tub marked Do NOT ENTER and most people won't even look it thinking it either pet food or something dead.

If I wanted crumbs in my butter I would buy it that way .

Me neither! That's why I always use two knives!

DH does this all the time, I just scrape them out, throw it away, and keep going. Of all the things he does that drives me crazy, crumbs in the butter isn't on the top. But he does laundry, so it's all good. :teeth:

I didn't vote because I would vote "it depends".

If I were to go to my mom's or sister's and use their butter and there are some crumbs in it, it wouldn't bother me. I mean, I wouldn't choose to put crumbs in it, but they wouldn't gross me out.

Now if I went to a dinner party and there were crumbs in someone else's butter not related to me, I wouldn't use any. Whenever I have guests, I use stick butter on a butter dish instead of a tub.

Your Dad has a most annoying habit there. I would be tempted (for calorie-saving) to go without butter. I do it for dieting purposes already.

My roommate leaves crumbs and God knows what else in the butter...it's not always identifiable. I am so grossed out by it. I mention it to him all the time, to please wipe his knife off before he dips back in, but he just keeps doing it! He also washes my towels and bedding, which he uses, with his clothes! That's a whole other topic though, I suppose. That and, "How to get a man to hear you, shy of beating him about the head and shoulders"...lol!"

Zombie thread but I'll reply.

If they're "my" crumbs, it's OK.

If they're someone else's crumbs, I scrape them away before using the butter.

Gosh I have never ever thought about crumbs in the butter. That said, if I’m having company over for dinner, I would have a stick of butter on a nice butter dish.

So I guess that means I HAVE actually thought about it subconsciously, because I go to the extra effort of putting butter on a butter dish for company.
