cruising with mentally or physically disabled

Hi everyone
I'm on a long-shot kind of quest, and hope for your help. We went on a Disney cruise with my Down syndrome ds a few years ago. It was the high point of his life! Now I'm trying to write some grant proposals to fund a cruise for my son's respite group. As I put together the materials, I have lovely photos I can use of ds interacting with Disney characters and enjoying the cruise. But it would be much better if I had photos of other disabled people as well enjoying a Disney cruise. If you happen to have a photo or two that you wouldn't mind my using, would you please pm it to me?

Also, I'd really appreciate any advise anybody has. Do you have an idea for a TA that might be generous? A name of anyone at Disney that might be helpful? Any suggestions at all would be great!

I'm aware of Autism on the Seas. What I picture is a cruise similar to what they do, but using the staff the kids have been working with for years.

Wow, what a great idea! I don't have any pictures as my DD doesn't "look" disabled so it wouldn't help.

But I do want to make sure you are aware that DCL changed some rules in late 2011 since you indicate you cruised "a few years ago." Adults are no longer allowed in the kids clubs during "secured programming" though they do offer "Open House" times at each club at least once a day when adults may accompany children. I am aware of what that travel agency has noted on their website, but haven't cruised with them. Some of what they propose they do is not allowed on DCL - it might be allowed on other cruise lines and might have been allowed on DCL prior to the rule change, but it isn't any longer. No adult may accompany a child into any of the kids clubs except during Open House; and children are not allowed to attend a younger group than their physical age despite documented cognitive-level.

That said, the children can still have a wonderful cruise experience. If they are capable of being in a group setting without a direct 1:1, they should be fine in the clubs. The kids club CM staff work well with special needs kids, they just can't provide 1:1 support. And there are lots of family-friendly activities for all ages outside of the clubs as well.

To my knowledge DCL no longer offers group packages, but if I were you I'd contact them directly anyway and see what they suggest. Good luck!

ETA: I hope this didn't come across as negative, I think you have a terrific idea. I just wanted you to be aware of the current situation on DCL if you haven't cruised in the past 18 months or so.
