I'm still looking for a fall 2016 cruise and some lines (NCL and Celebrity that I've noticed) have cruises that spend one or more nights in port. For example a Celebrity cruise that I'm currently looking at spends three days in Bermuda. What is the point of this? Is there so much to do and see there or do people just lay on the beach? Have you taken a cruise like this and if so how was it?

We did the west coast DCL cruise a few years ago and stayed over night in San Francisco. It was like having a hotel room already while we toured the city for 2 days. We could come and go as we pleased on and off the ship. DCL spends the night only a handful of times in ports.

I was on this cruise too, the Pixar Cruise. It was great having the ship there overnight. Were able to do the Walt Museum and had a whole other day in the city.

We did a RCL cruise that had an overnight in San Francisco. We enjoyed a baseball game that night. It allows you the time to explore location in the evening/night time when typically on a cruise you'd only be there during the day.

The difference would be a docked vs a tendered port. When the ship is docked, generally you can come and go as you please all night long. A tendered port will still have an all aboard time as tendering will stop at some point. You could stay in the port overnight, but there'd be some risk that the ship not be able to anchor and have tenders running again the 2nd day (high winds, rough seas). Thus you're not able to get back on the ship. I have read about this happening with an overnight in Cabo.

We are looking forward to staying over night in Reykjavik, Iceland this summer. I think exploring the city during the evening hours will be great!

Exactly that. Bermuda is a country to itself and while the island is compact you can easily spend several days there.

I would totally sign up for an Alaska cruise that stayed overnight in one or more ports!

We've stayed over night in ports in Quebec, Maui, San Francisco and St. Petersburg Russia. When we cruised Celebrity out of Sydney Australia, the ship had been docked over night as a floating hotel for the guests' last night on the cruise before ours. Some ports just need more than one day to even begin to explore them.

You'll be taking some nice pics of the midnight sun!! We did this last year. One cruiser (who was very into photography) took a special excursion with his family that ended at 4 am and was geared around photographing the midnight sun at various locations. Others got amazing pics from the boat at midnight, 1 am, etc. enjoy!

Thanks everyone. I'm not sure Celebrity is right for my family but I'll certainly keep the idea of overnight stays in my searches.

We stayed overnight in St. Petersburg, Russia last year. I think all of the cruise ships there stayed overnight. There's a lot to see and do in the late evening so it's nice to be able to take advantage of it. I think Venice is also a place where ships commonly stay overnight and my Dad's cruise stayed overnight in Rio two years ago.

We are staying overnight in Reykjavik in a few weeks, and have stayed overnight in Copenhagen and St Petersburg you can come and go as you want.

In Copenhagen we went out past a Palo dinner to the city and we had a shuttle running, we walked around then walked back to the ship, getting back Kate at night. In StP, we were out all day and evening, coming back around 10 pm. We toured canals, went to the Faberge museum, and had a helicopter ride.
