We are planning a cruise for next spring. For the "formal" dinners is it necessary for my husband to wear a suit? He does not own one, he hates to "dress up", or can they wear polo shirts and dress pants? I want to catch a summer suit on sale this fall if he will need one. We aren't sure which cruise line, most likely Carnival or Celebrity it that makes a difference.

Thanks

Hi there :wave2:

If you can find a suit for him on sale, that'd probably be good :) Most of the people do dress up on the formal nights on a cruise. There are those people though, who get annoyed at the idea of a formal night and "having" to dress up.

When we cruised last year on a Royal Caribbean ship, MOST people were very dressed up on the formal night, as well as the semi-formal night. A few weren't, and wore regular pants and polo shirts.

If you can't find a suit on sale for your DH, and/or he refuses to wear a suit, then how about buying a nice button down shirt for him, and a tie?? During the meal a lot of the men take their jackets off anyway.

As for cruise lines, Celebrity would be MUCH more likely to have more people dressed up for formal night, as opposed to Carnival. Nothing against Carnival, but from what I understand it is a much more casual atmosphere on board than Celebrity is.

Have fun! :sunny:

If he doesn't want to get dressed up you could always choose to either dine in your room or at one of the other places you can get food on your cruise.....

A polo shirt and khakis are appropriate for the casual dining nights. The ships offer a tuxedo rental program, if he doesn't have one. If that isn't of interest, you could look for a dark suit at home.

Celebrity will be much more formal than Carnival will be.

We have never been on a cruise, but have been recently throwing around the idea of going on one.
Here is a website that has a message board with alot of cruise info:

moderators..... I hope it is okay that I posted this link. I thought it would be okay since she is planning on going on a NON-Disney vacation. If it's not okay, then please delete. :)

As my3kids noted there is rental available from www.cruiselineformal.com. They deliver right to your room and give you 2 shirts (for formal & semi-formal), pants, jacket, cumberbund and tie. We did this for my DH on our first 7 day and plan to do it on our 10-day.

I think you will find that most people dress up on Celebrity, especially for formal night.

Not as much on Carnival.

Most ships now offer an alternative with more casual dining too if that is what would make you more comfortable.

Think about doing the rental and think of the wonderful pictures you'll get with you both dressed to the nines!
