One of the stories on tonight's Prime Time Live on ABC is on health conditions on cruise ships. Thought everyone may be interested in watching~or maybe not!

I just saw this on the channel guide. I thought it might be interesting but then again there may be things I don't want to know. :)

Let the flu season hysteria begin!!
Must be a slow news month.

Oh this is disgusting! :( What they found has nothing to do with the flu or norwalk. UGH!!!

Yuk! I always clean when we first get to a room or cabin but yuk! how would you clean that or know where to clean, (walls, bedspreads, ice trays). I wish I had'nt seen that.. going next month! LT

Hmmm...think that I will be adding a container of lysol wipes to the packing list?

I missed the show (DH has norovirus -- NOT from a cruise). Can anyone fill me in on what they showed. I bring Clorox wipes everywhere and wipe down all handles, knobs, remotes, table tops, etc. No one is allowed to touch the bed spread. What am I missing??? (I'm scared to find out!)

After that show,I want to pack my own sheets!!! :earseek: Yuk!! I don't even think bleach wipes would help!!! I'm going to have nightmares :faint:SO (what's the Deal with the signature section!!!! It worked the last time, but not now??!! :confused3 )They took away the countdown by days-see tech board if yours doesn't work-now I have a new one-just not the same without a day countdown :sad2:

It really was disgusting. And they found the exact same results when they tested hotel rooms......I guess it is not just on ships where people behave badly. I wonder what the hospitality industry would do if we all started bringing our own sheets and bedspreads.

Our clorox wipes will do little to relieve semen and urine stains on the blankets, bedspreads, doors, walls, closets and ice trays!!!!

Yuk!!!!!!

I thought that I didn't want to know what the show said, now I am paranoid. I think we will all now spend the whole first day scouring our rooms.

They basically found bodily fluids (urine and semen) in every stateroom they checked on every ship....and I might add in all the hotel rooms they checked a few years ago...so it is not just on cruise ships...other than the yuck factor these stains would rarely get you sick according to the report. They actually found very little norovirus on any of the ships...Disney was mentioned as having had the outbreak back in 2003.

I guess these things have always been there but we never had the technology to "see" it before. I doubt very much any hotel or cruiseline would wash the bedspreads after every cruise....it would be impossible with the short turnaround time. I for one was happier in the dark....what's the saying ...ignorance is bliss.

I can understand people being "romantic" in places other than the bed...but the urine on the coffee table one got me wondering!!!

Okay, I started this thread and then fell asleep before the show, damn my pain meds! It sounds like I missed something that I didn't want to see in the first place as I get grossed out very easily. Hopefully this will make the travel industry take alittle notice and clean up a bit. It sounds like cleaning up just a bit more would be a positive thing.

The cleaning folks can't see these stains unless they had the "black light". These weren't obvious stains but ones the naked eye could not see. I am sure they left the cabin thinking it was thoroughly cleaned. It really is a tough situation....the passengers don't want this in the cabins, and the cruiselines would then have to "black light" every cabin, every cruise....think about it...the logistics are incredible!!!

I know this doesn't help the stains found on comforters and such, but I always bring a can of Lysol with us on vacation and spray everything down. Perhaps I will also bring Lysol wipes with us next time. Better to be safe than sorry.

Does anyone here bring their own sheets and pillowcases with them on vacation for sanitary reasons?

Last week the news did an "eye team" investigation locally where I live. They found "body fluids" on the remote controls using the black light on every hotel they checked. Only 2 hotels were mentioned as coming up clean when the tv remotes were checked. One of those hotels owns a black light and uses it routinely as part of there cleaning process.

For a cruise ship it is probably unrealistic to use a black light in every cabin once a week, but maybe they can wipe down all tables, front of the cupboards/drawers, tv remote... as part of their cleaning process. I don't think it would add on that much time.
Also, maybe they can alott 2 bedspreads per cabin & interchange them at least once a month. That way the bedspreads can be washed somewhat routinely too. :confused3 Just some thought's. :)

I agree with the statement too. ('Ignorance is bliss.')

If I'm not going to die from it, I try not to worry too much. (Or I just chase the thoughts out of my mind once they pop up.) I think the Lysol wipes are a good idea. I'm obsessed with keeping my hands clean, too. (I'm never without Purell.)

I fell asleep before it came on! I think it's probably best that I missed that one. I'll definitely clean the remotes, handles...pretty much any surface I can think of the next time we stay at a hotel or on a cruise ship!

I found the whole thing to be kind of silly and overdramatized. Yes, it's gross but I'm willing to bet there are things of this nature not noticable to the naked eye everywhere that people stay.

A couple of years ago we had a booth going at a Girl Scout function where we had the kids come in and wash their hands in cool water (and soap) for not a full 2 minutes. We then had them go in a dark room and shone a black light on their hands to see how much dirt was left. All the kids hands were glowing grossly. Even some of the kids used warmer water and they still glowed.

I'm wondering if things were cleaned and it was just residue that didn't come off (the walls etc. not the sheets and spreads).

Anyway, I'll bring the Lysol wipes and wipe the best I can but I'm not going to dwell on it. I'll just repeat - What is, is.- (over and over.... my mantra for things I can't control ;) )

Anyone willing to let them come into your house and do the black light test?

I think we'd all be surprised or grossed out.

I'm still trying to figure out how cherry yogurt got on my family room ceiling. :rotfl:
