Are there baggage searches before boarding the cruise ship? Is it as restrictive as airline carry-on baggage? Can we bring pocket knives, corkscrews, nail clippers, mace, etc?

There were actually quite a few security guards and police at the port, including bomb dogs. You will go through a metal detector, just like at the airport. They will also X-ray all your carry on bags. Not sure exactly what they will, or will not, allow but, why would you need mace?

No, mace is definitely not allowed in either your checked or carry-on bags. That could be considered a weapon and they have a ZERO WEAPONS policy. That includes dive knives.

Corkscrews, small knives such as Swiss Army knives (the VERY small kind), nail clippers, etc. are all fine to bring onboard. I'd still pack them in your checked bag though, the carry-ons go through airport style x-ray machines.

Enjoy your cruise! :)

I had a corkscrew in my checked bag, no problem.

On the way out of teh port I saw a line of guys who were at a security booth reclaiming their Leathermans and pocket knives and such.

At least with DCL if you show up with a restricted item, they will let you check it with them and reclaim it at the end of your cruise. And they're much more polite than airport security people :)

Thanks for the info. I don't want to bring mace, I was just giving examples of things I know are confiscated by airport security. I was thinking of bringing a corkscrew and a Leatherman. Sounds like I ought to leave the Leatherman at home. I plan to pack those kinds of things in checked luggage anyway and definitely not carry-ons.
Thanks again. :D

Last year DCL confiscated my sister in law's small sewing scissors from her checked bags. Gave them back at the end. Anita.

In addition to the aforementioned corkscrew, I also had a very small, blunt ended pair of scissors (the total length of them including handle is about 2") and they were not confiscated. They come in handy for cutting moleskin and such.

Oh good, I had been wondering about bringing my own corkscrew.

I had packed a corkscrew and lighter in my checked duffle bag at DCL. That bag was delivered to our cabin much later (around 5:00) than the rest of our bags and those two items had been removed from my little dap bag and were lying on top of everyting else in the duffle bag. The bag was not locked so they must have just searched it, probably after it was xrayed.

It might actually be easier to carry these items on in order to avoid any delay in getting your bags.
