On our last cruise, we had two rooms. DH had one with my DS and I had another with my sister. We bought two placeholders, one in DH's name and one in mine (were are one household).

Are those placeholders tied together and must be used on the same sailing or can they be split with DH taking one, say in the fall while I take the other, say next spring? Also, can we be each other's +1?

My understanding that you can have two placeholders per home address booked on each cruise and those placeholders are to be used on the same future cruise.

I know in the beforetimes you had to use them together. But since we each have our name on a room I wondered if that still applied. I have a feeling the fact that we have the same address will be my undoing.

They are separate. We’ve done this before. If you have one room and buy 2 placeholders, those are tied together. If you have 2 cabins and you buy one placeholder per cabin, they are 2 separate ones. I travel with my daughter. I buy 2 placeholders (1 for me and 1 for her). She buys 2 placeholders (1 for her and 1 for me). we don’t always get to use both. I’ve always used mine Even when she doesn’t. However, that was when we filled out the card to write each name on the placeholder. keep in mine now that when buying 2 placeholders per cabin, 1 has your name on it and the other has TBD on it along with your last name.
