Howdy!

Me and Val have booked a 4 night Disney Cruise, February 4th sailing...And we are completely lost

The planning wizard in me, used to feverishly navigating WDW blindfolded, is quite overwhelmed and humbled. So we are coming to you fellow gaydisboarders for some help. I know a few of you have sailed on the Wonder before and am relying on your general fabulousness and advice...

We have questions regarding:
-on-board alcohol (is this like a high school kegger? can you bring you own? :rotfl2: )
-palo reservations for dinner and champagne brunch (how, how much, when and where)
-dining seating arrangements (being raised by wolves, i would prefer to dine at a small table, and not share seating, biergarten style. is this possible?)
-nassau excursions. tips? suggestions?

 Feeling a tad under-prepared here...

-on-board alcohol (is this like a high school kegger? can you bring you own? :rotfl2: )

You may bring your own on board, however, you can't carry it on a plane, so you will have to buy it in FL. DCL is the ony cruise line that I know of that allows you to BYOB. If you bring wine and have it opened in the dining room, you may get charged a corkage fee.

-palo reservations for dinner and champagne brunch (how, how much, when and where)

As soon as you can, go over to the cruise board as look at the FAQ for advance booking dates. Dinner is good, but everyone I know raves about the brunch, although I don't think it is champagne. Since I didn't get to do it on the 14 night (imagine that it was full) I can't tell you for sure. Again, the cruise board should have the answer. You can book online once you are paid in full, if you don't you will have to go to the place they do the reservations on board as soon as you get on the ship. Dinner at Palo is 10 dollars per person, brunch used to be 5. THis is to cover the service, and many people give more. I tipped an additonal 20 for dinner and 10 for Tea. Drinks are additional and include 15% tip at all bars, pools, etc.

-dining seating arrangements (being raised by wolves, i would prefer to dine at a small table, and not share seating, biergarten style. is this possible?)
-nassau excursions. tips? suggestions?

You will most likely get to be at a table for 6 or 8. You may get a table for 4 , only in Palo will you be guaranteed to dine alone. If you want fewer kids in the DR, request late seating and then request the rotation that has formal night in Triton's, this is usually the most adult oriented rotation.

Tips - these can be prepaid on your ship board account or you can pay in cash on the last night. If you prepay, you will get little voucher slips to give to your servers, cabin steward and head waiter. The recommended guidelines are in the brochure and I think they are also on the DCL website.

Nassau - I am jaded, but stay on the ship. Nassau is not the nicest, and since you will be going to castaway cay, you will have a great private island day, a beautiful beach and plenty of things to do. Liquor is cheaper on board than on the island, I hate getting asked if I want my hair braided or if I want to but t shirts 3 for 10 or ganja, or if I want the beads that they placed on my neck for a "donation". I just like to be on the ship with the pool to myself. If you do get off the ship, you can take a cab over to Paradise Island, but beware unless you are a guest at Atlantis or any of the other hotels, you won't get to see the beach. You can get a "day room" at the comfort inn or at Atlantis that will let you use the beach, but it's about 100 bucks and the beach at Castaway is free!!!! The Crystal Palace Hotel and Casino, or it may now be called the Cable Beach Hotel and Casino is also a cab ride away, they welcome cruise guests to use thier beach for free. There is a Beaches or Sandals there, too and they may do day passes to thier beach. I did the Thriller Boat ride a few years back, too much slowing down for sightseeing. I also have done the horse drawn carriage ride, its OK to get a bit of Nassau City flavour, but not great thing. The straw market is open again after burning down a couple of years ago, it is a very crowded building where you can buy any number of straw items (hats, bags, decor, etc) from any number of people who do like to bargain, but not give stuff away. There is a Bacardi factory on the island and it is open for tours on some days. After stopping in Nassau 11 times on ships and staying there for 3 nights once, I don't need to see it again. You may like it tho.

Here is some more trivia. There is a free soda dispenser on Deck 9 near the Mickey Pool. Bring a mug or buy one on the shop, they do have paper cups available. There is a "Dumbotron" movie screen at the Goofy Pool which shows movies, Disney Channel Shows, etc. The adult pool is just that and kids are told to leave by CMS if they try to hang out there. The pools are not salt water and are usually full all the time. Don't miss the first night in Animator's palette for the changing picture show. DO go to Martini tasting if they offer it, get your tickets from guest services. There are lots of Character picture opportunities as well as non characters. You can get them taken and look, you don't have to buy, but they make great memories.

Do you have a cabin assigned?

I think you will have a great time. I sailed on the Wonder in 2000, the Magic in 2005, and 13 other cruises. If you have more questions, please ask.!

Mickeyfan1 answered all your questions very well. Since this is the first time you are cruising you will not be able to make on line reservations for Palo until 75 days out. It will probably show no reservations available, but once on board immediately go to Diversions and make your reservation. Brunch is only available on sea days and is wonderful. In my opinion you can skip Palo dinner and only go to brunch. The cost for both brunch and dinner is $10 per person.

I also recommend going over to the cruise board for answers. They are very helpful over there and very accepting. Enjoy your cruise.

Hi Nordkin! I really wish we had met up on the repo.

I didn't want to disuade her from Palo Dinner, the views are great and don't forget the soufle dessert. But the more people that do both, the more they say brunch is the best.

I was in Nassau in January and had a very good diving experience there. Had to book it myself, but it was great! Also went to Atlantis at night & just walked around (not sure how long the Wonder stays there). The aquarium is phenomenal, but we went after they stop charging, not sure what time that occurs.

Hisselfness and I are sailing on the 4-night DCL cruise this coming Sunday. It is also the very first time we've done any cruise at all. That is unless you count when we used to go crusing when we were young bucks!

You seem to have had all of your questions answered. Look at allearsnet they have a pretty good downloadable huge cruise guide PDF, also the Passporter for the Disney Cruise is pretty good.

Oh can I go with you? I am ready for a cruise again. :)

You will have the time of your life.

Thanks so much MickeyFan and everyone for your input.

This was a last minute add-on to a 7 day WDW trip so we are trying to mimimize our costs. We'll be splitting our time between AKL and POP and hitting all our favorite restaurants (Cali Grill, Cellier, Jiko, Alfredo, Brown Derby..) so trying to sail 'economically'.

We are definitely not going to splurge for a seaview as we will never be in our cabins anyway. It is -13 celcius in Montreal today and I plan on spending every glorious minute outside once onboard :)

You say soufflé and i am there. Hopefully we can find something at Palo's for dinner at some point during our trip. We are usually pretty late eaters 9pm+ so hopefully this can work in our favour... It is my understanding we should try to book this on the second night of the scheduled Animator's Palette dinner..

Thanks Iankh, I just ordered the Passporter guide on Amazon. And I assume you are talking about a whole other type of cruising ;)

;)

If you are Cat 11, see if you can get one of the side entry cabins on the 5th deck, I think I was in 5421, I will have to look up my old docs and see. Very quiet area, and more floor space.

Depending on your dining rotation, you could be in any of the 3 restaurants twice. You generally repeat the same one from the first night, but not always. You can request a roatation, but you may not get it, although at that time of year, you should be good to go with that. I think ATPA would put you in Tritons on Formal night and Animators on 1st and last, so you could try for Palo on the last night.

If you can't get dinner in Palo, remember you can always sit at the bar and have drinks and desert.

I like the way you think Marsha! Martinis & soufflé
Something our very own Viki would surely approve of!

Thanks again for all your help. I made your suggested requests with the travel agent!

Oooh, La La!!! :drinking1

But I prefer both on land! :beach:

Have a super cruise!!!

I can happily report Nassau has a Starbucks by the port, in case you are addicted. It's a nice place to rest, lots of comfy chairs (and wooden too). And a great balcony overlooking the street/port. Good people-watching place. Was filled with crew members on their laptops (wireless). Mine was in the room otherwise I would have been on, too.

We had blended teas...I didn't see "regular" iced tea but they had mango and raspberry tea which was kind of like the tangerine/pomegranate things from this summer.

As soon as you board the ship go straight to Diversions and you should be able to snag a brunch reservation. If you are not able to, put your name on the wait list.

I didn't know about the Starbucks in Nassau, good to know.

Hisselfness and I don't have anything booked up except Palo's on our 4th night. He did not want to do any excursions or anything like that, just get away from it all.

However, he is starting to think of this as an Agatha Christie mysterie and has decided to take a panama hat. He's hoping there will be a murder on board. if he could, he would also pack fabulous frocks.
