I have just made reservation for our first ever Disney cruise and PIF is due tomorrow. I will be using chase sapphire to book the cruise and was wondering if I should purchase a separate insurance since trip cancellation, trip delay and travel accident is covered?

Cruise is this Sept so it will be hurricane season. So excited for this trip! I am kicking myself for waiting so long to book, I was hoping for a GT but seems like it's not coming out, booking this so I can stop obsessing about it.

Another item that you can cover with trip insurance is medial/evacuation coverage. It's important to know that medical costs (if you incur any during the cruise) must be paid up front and reimbursed once back home. And many US health plans do not cover "out of country" (which is where you are once you board the ship).

We always purchase 3rd party trip insurance. The cost is generally fairly low and you get much more coverage than insurance through DCL.

As with many things related to travel insurance, it depends.

Are you concerned about pre-existing conditions for you or a family member? Chase won't cover this.

Are you traveling with non-family members? Chase won't cover you if you cancel due to an illness or death of a traveling companion if that person is not a family member.

Do you need medical coverage or evacuation coverage? Chase doesn't include this (although some other credit cards include evacuation).

If any of these seem important to you. It would be worthwhile doing a side by side comparison of the coverage from Chase and that which is available from third party providers.

We used the Chase coverage for a 4 night DCL cruise. It was just my husband and I. We cancelled due to my last minute stomach bug and received a full reimbursement.

Best of luck in your decision. -- Suzanne

Thank you for all your help. We are travelling as a family and we do not have any pre-existing conditions. My only worry is medical coverage.

I booked using the Chase Sapphire card as well. How was the claim process? Did you just need a doctor's note saying you couldn't travel?

I was going to mention just this.

We buy for medical evacuation if needed. You never want to have that problem, but if you do, you don't want to be eating $50-$100k in medical evac costs. I have a friend who has needed that type of assistance. Small amount of my trip insurance premium is well worth the peace of mind of knowing should an emergency arise I'll be taken care of.

It was pretty straight forward to get the fare refunded to our credit card. We initiated the process by phone, filled out a form and provided documentation online, which included the physician's note, evidence of the credit card charges and evidence we had cancelled the cruise. -- Suzanne

You right, for peace of mind I bought medical insurance coverage. I was actually surprised at the cost, it was pretty cheap.
