We've been to Disney World at Christmas time before, so know that the crowds are crazy. Is it like that at Disneyland or is it more manageable? Looking specifically at the week between Christmas and New Year's.

That is the BUSIEST week of the year. We go for Christmas, but leave the 27th before crowds get even bigger. I love Christmas in the parks, but would never face the New Year's crowd level.

I love going to Disneyland during the Christmas season. But yes, its busy! Winter break start and end dates vary from school to school, but the week between Christmas and New Years is always part of winter break. Also, So Cal and Deluxe AP's are blocked out during peak seasons and this week falls within their block out dates.

HTH,
Kriss pirate:

We have been for both Christmas and New Years. It is definitely busy busy busy but we have still been able to have fun and enjoy our time there. We love the holidays there.

If you have a choice go the week before Christmas. On a scale of 1-10 the crowd level that week might be a 9+. The crowd level between Christmas and New Years is a 15.

All threads I've ever read here regarding that week have it listed as "BBBBUSY!!!"

So if this is the time you'll be there, brace for MAX crowds.

At least by checking into it now you can be prepared.

Good luck with your travel plans.

I find its slowish in the morning and picks up as the day goes on.

When does it clear out? Does it get significantly calmer the Monday after New Year's weekend like in Orlando?
Not really. Most APs are blocked at the end of December and will come back the last few days before the Christmas decorations come down. It's different though, with the mornings being less crowded and more people showing up in the afternoon.

So, when do the Christmas/New Year's crowds typically dissipate?

Went on Christmas day. CA was dead from open until noon. After noon it was crazy packed. Planned on going to DL but by 6 the lines were half way to CA and they weren't letting people in. Kept checking my Mousewait app and the day after Superbowl through around 3 weeks was dead. Lots of rides closed though.

In truth...when the holiday decor starts to be removed and rides with overlays start to close. The problem is that during the height of the Christmas break period, many of the APs are blocked out. The blockout usually ends a few days before the official end of the season, so it gives the AP holders one last chance to go to the parks to see the decor and attractions. The parks aren't going to be as crowded as the week from Christmas to New Year, but they aren't going to be quiet either.
