we are visiting in early august for the first time. I know it will be crowded. Do the parks have a similar pattern to wdw where it's most crowded in the afternoon and are less crowded in the morning and evening or is it different there? Thanks

The unofficial guide is hot on this sort of thing, but is out of date (last edition was 2010). There are Extra Magic hours from 8-10 am for hotel guests every day (in Fantasy Land and Discoveryland), so you cannot get ahead in the same way as Orlando unless you are a hotel guest. Since the Hotels are much closer to the parks my guess is more hotel guests pop in and out. Also since the parks open at 10am you will have more people at rope drop. What I do not know is if you have that similar drop off of day guests. Logically, I guess crowds build and peak somewhere in the middle of the day and are bound to drop off as day trippers go back to Paris or elsewhere.

Weekends should be avoided if possible.

Disney have an app where you can see live current queue times, so if you are really keen you could observe those in mid late July (which will be as close to your trip!)
