Been going to WDW for some 25 years now. Never once looked at or used a 'crowd calendar'. Read the Birnbaum books the first few years, which helped with planning strategies.
We usually hit the morning EMH park (if there is one), bail when the park gets crowded (somewhere between 11:00 and 1:00, depending on the park), take a midday break, then hit up another park in the evening. We don't do evening EMH in all the parks. Not really that effective for rides at DHS or Epcot until the very end, but it is nice to have added hours in World Showcase if you like that.
Our strategy is not really affected by the crowd levels. Doesn't matter how crowded a park is if you know how to avoid the worst of it.
I can see how crowd calendar could be much more useful if you are going to be in the park all day. If you can't get away from the crowds the parks can get tiresome and annoying.
