We are going to Disneyland in October of this year and Disney world September of next year

what we thinking about doing is buying season passes for DL then up grading them to the premier pass for DW. does anyone know if that is possible? and do they over lap dates?

We just upgraded a DL Annual Pass to the Premier AP. Not sure what you mean by "over lap dates," but the Premier will keep the same expiration date as your original DL annual pass. Also the Premier will not be prorated even though it is close to the end date of your original DL annual pass so you might want to do the math to see if a separate AP or Magic Your Way tickets to DisneyWorld might be more cost effective compared to the price of the Premier.

You would end up paying the full price difference between the passes as the other poster mentioned and the premier pass would expire the same date as the original DL pass. Currently, the price difference between the highest tier DL pass and the premier pass is $390 before taxes. Unless you're going to be going to WDW for more than 10 days in September or park hop during your stay, it may very well be less expensive to just buy WDW tickets.

The past few years annual passes have had a decent price increase at some point in the fall as well. If the APs went up in price before you upgraded to the premier, you would end up paying the price difference between what you paid on your pass and the current premier price, not what your DL pass is currently valued at after the price hike I believe as well.

Definitely do the math and make sure it makes sense for you before doing it, or you could end up spending more money than you need to.
