I will be needing a new vehicle soon. I currently drive a mini-van. Dh does not want another van. I like sitting up high. I don't want a major gas guzzler or something well over 35k. I would appreciate any help, recommendations from people that have a Crossover type vehicle that they love, hate, etc. Thanks!

That's the problem with crossovers-they are gas guzzlers. Your van probably gets better mileage then the crossovers. You might want to look into a Rav 4 or a Honda CRV. They get about 28 MPG highway.

My 2008 Mercury Mariner (Ford Escape twin) gets about 25 in mixed highway/local driving. I bought it used for about 14 grand; I'm loving it.

It's a small SUV, not a crossover. But it's just the right size for us. Seats 5, can haul cargo inside, and tow our boat.

We have a Chevy Traverse, which is a larger cross-over, and we LOVE it. Our's seats 7 (standard is 8) and we get anywhere from 22-26 MPG. :)

We have the towing package, so if we ever need to haul anything (boat, trailer, camper, etc) we're good to go.

this minus the tow package

We love our Honda CRV! Pretty good gas mileage, was way under 35K (although we got the basic model, no frills) and very comfortable inside.

Good luck on your search...

I love my edge!!! I'm such a person that needs (or really wants, not needs) a new car every 2-3 years. I'm working on 4 w/my Edge and I don't want to get rid of it! I will have to in a few years, but I'd be going back to suv, which i don't want to do, but w/3 kids, it's minivan or suv.

Another vote for the CR-V. Mine's a 2007 and if I had to replace it, I would buy another one without question. (knock wood) We have had no troubles with it aside from normal maintenance. I can carry lots of stuff or my two big dogs in the back. It works really well for our family.

Mine's one of the upper trim models (no navigation system though) and it was still well under $35K. I get about 24mpg in the city and about 29 on road trips.

Love, love, love my Toyota Highlander Hybrid. Great in snow, too.

Our Prius gets about 47 mpg. We are going to need to replace our other car (2002 Saturn Vue) in the next couple of years, and I'd like another small SUV. What kind of gas mileage do you get? And can you tow at all with it?

Another vote for the Edge! We get really good gas mileage (better than my dad's Montana, which is a mini-van). It was a really good price and is pretty decked out. I find it extremely comfortable, especially for long trips (8+ hours). There is lots of storage room in the trunk area. The backseat is also very roomy for adults. We love it!

What does he have against the van?
He is the one who does all the car care and we tend to keep our vehicles forever, and he hates working on mini vans since the engine is more compact and you have to move so much out of the way in order to get to what you want.

I would love this, but I am thinking it may cost us more than I want to spend. When I said no more than 35k, I was putting that in the hopes that we will be able to bargain and get something below 30k. Do you mind me asking how much you paid for yours vs. sticker price?

I really like the highlanders! How roomy is it and are the very back seats comfortable?

Thanks for all the help. I am considering the Edge and Equinox, but am having a hard time giving up the extra seating, but may have to do that for price.

Wrong again. Do you even own a crossover? Most of them have comparable, if not better, mileage than a minivan.

We have the GMC version, the Acadia, and we LOVE it. Very decent gas mileage for a car that big. Very comfortable on the highway for long car trips.

Now mine is fully loaded and sticker price was about $45k. But you could definitely get a decent model for less. It's the fancy things like navigation, DVD, sunroofs that start making it pricey. If you want the roomy 3rd row, its worth it to take a look.

I have been test driving big SUV's and crossovers because I need room for young men to fit their knees. So far the front runner is the Chevy Traverse, it's outshining the Suburban and Navigator (bigger but with the seating I want) on cost and maneuverability, also Consumer Reports loved it. It is listed as a Large SUV but it's not, at least not IMO, sitting next to something like a Suburban it looks like a runt, substantially smaller which is why I consider it a crossover, but roomy inside, that's why you have to go look. The Traverse drove really really well, smooth and easy to manage plus the 3rd seat had nice deep wells to fit the feet of young adults. I have been in every back seat I can find and there is no way I am paying all that $ for someone in my car to kiss their knees. Why on earth the car makers put seats flat on the ground is beyond me, I guess people don't bother looking:confused3 Now I am just waiting on a financing deal of some kind, all the auto makers seem very stingy these days, that's ok I can wait.

Do lots of test drives and when you do I'd suggest giving the Traverse a spin, it was noticeably better IMHO... plus it's American.

OMG ITA! We bought ours a few months ago and LOVE it! We too have older kids now - teens, two who are TALL who always have friends along. It is an amazing vehicle. Its big but drives like a car, smoooooth.... And the best part? Going to the million out of town games we've had --- its getting 28.5 MPG !!!
I seriously can't believe how good it is. We always had minivans, usually Town & Country which we loved, but this baby is a dream. Who knew!
:thumbsup2
Adding: DH just said they're giving really good deals on it now, and he wishes we would have waited to save $$. But not me LOL
