Cross border shopping

I am really lookng at getting one. Things are so much cheeper on the other side. Only had one grumps age so far since April.

Just a question about Nexus? How do you use it? You drive into that lane and scan your card? Then is it the computer asking you questios or a person who may or may not have taken their happy pill that morning?

We have Nexus and yes, you're correct - you just drive through in the Nexus lane and scan your card. You do need to talk to the border guard in the booth though. Just make sure you answer any questions honestly and you'll be good to go. At least 75% of the time, the only question we get is "bringing anything back?".

I've had to pay on groceries before. it's the same as here, depends if they deem it a necessity or not. Mind you I've only been made to pay once and it was $18 on $180 but the guard went through my receipts with a fine tooth comb. lol.

For those using Nexus, we had a long explanation/lecture that you must complete a form each time you have purchased goods and you are crossing the border especially If you are using he Nexus lanes. there is a box prior to approaching the booth that you must insert the form. I won't risk losing my Nexus, so if we have more than allowed we go through regular line & declare all. Sometimes we get charged and sometimes not.

What?? Really? I have had Nexus for 4 years, was never told that, never done it. I usually travel with 3 friends who also have Nexus. I made them get it or they weren't coming shopping in my car lol, anyways, they have never filled that out either. The past few weeks I have been over almost weekly ..having items shipped Stateside and not once been asked or even noticed the deposit box. I always declare, and more often than not, don't pay a cent which is a bonus!

:confused3

We travel via the Whirpool bridge very often & they watch for you to place th card. As mentioned we don't wish to risk losing Nexus therefore follow regulations set out. I would suggest you read the guidelines so that you don face a surprise one day. Or mention you were not aware. Surprised since they distribute the books when you pick up your Nexus card. You must attach. Credit card to it.

I crossed over at Whirlpool last week too...I will check my book...hmmmm

I called Nexus. The 'Travellers Declaration Form' is to expedite the processing of the Nexus lane and keep it moving...it is optional to complete and have any taxes/duties processed on a credit card. A verbal declaration is absolutely acceptable and under no circumstance can you lose your Nexus card for not having your declaration completed via the form.

He said if the line were crazy busy..the guy behind might get ticked at someone slowing things down, but other than that , either is totally allowed.

Groceries absolutely ARE included in your total declared value! We do 95% of our weekly grocery shopping in WA State - so once a week, we go through the border and back lol

You must declare the value of everything you have purchased and are bringing back - including your groceries!

Are you one of the Canadian customers at the Bellingham Costco that they've been complaining so loudly about? :rotfl:

We were told about the forms during our Nexus interview, but we've never actually filled one out because the first time we used our card to cross the border (a year ago or so), the border guard told us not to do it, as it's just more paperwork for them (:rotfl:) and a verbal declaration is all they need.
