Crocs Warning

I thought I would share a few pictures of my 8 year old dds crocs. We were at the Living Seas on our WDW vacation and the front of one of her crocs got caught by the teeth in the escalator stairs. We were near the top and I think that it caught it as the stair was collapsing down. It happened so fast it was hard to tell. Luckily she was not wearing the strap on her heel and she pulled her foot back. She was not injured at all, just scared a little. I did an internet search of "crocs and escalators" and was surprised to see the results.

I hope this does not turn into one of those he said, she said, you should have done...nasty threads. I am only posting this because I know so many Disers and their children wear them.

Wow I am glad your DD is ok!

Wow! Thank goodness she got her foot out before anything bad happened. I would have never thought to been careful around escalators. I appreciate your warning.

OMG! I am really glad your DD didn't get hurt! :grouphug:

Thanks for posting this. I bought my girls some new Crocs Mary Janes to wear....we will be more careful than usual. I had a friend that worked for Montgomery and there were escalator accidents she would tell me about and I am always a bit nervous & cautious on them anyway.

Wow! Thank goodness your DD is OK! I thought most escalator accidents were from standing too close to the edge.

My DW loved wearing her crocs this year, and so did our girls. Last year my DW had blisters by the end of the first day wearing tennis shoes and so did my dds. However this year no one had one single blister or sore feet. I had no idea that they could get caught in an escalator, and it probably is a rare occurance. But I thought everyone should be aware that this can happen. We thanked the Lord that she had all 5 toes.

Wow, I have just gotten my DS 7 over an escalator phobia! :rotfl2: I have always kind of secretly had a fear that they could suck your foot in - and I was RIGHT! :rotfl: Elevator or stairs from now on!

My DH said he heard about Crocs and elevator accidents. I was trying to picture how it could happen and thought maybe the shoe, being so soft, would get stuck in the side of the moving step. Now I see how it can happen! Glad your daughter wasn't hurt!

Yeeowch! That Croc looks like it was attacked by a croc! (Bad joke, I know!)

I still can't figure out how they get stuck- it seems like flip flops would be much more likely!

Glad your daughter was ok! Did they have to stop the escalator to get the shoe out?

They can get 'stuck' in several ways...if the foot is too close to the edge of the escalator, it will 'stick' to the side and get pulled by the side teeth or if the foot is too close to the back of the step, where it collapses at the top, the teeth will close down on the front of the shoe, dragging the foot into the mechanism. My dad, ex-dh, and brother all worked in the elevator/escalator industry so I've heard some pretty horrific stories. Sneakers and boots (rubber types) used to be a huge issue on the escalators in the 'old days'. Now, I've taught my dd to stand right in the middle of the step and to not 'play games' trying to jump that last top step!
I'm so glad your dd is fine and suffered no physical ill effects. She must be a bit leery of getting back on an escalator!!

I'm glad your DD is ok! They had a thing on the news here about not wearing Crocs on escalators... lots of people in our mall were losing some digits.

Yow! That's scary! I'm glad your DD is ok. DH wears his Crocs all the time. I only wear my occasionally, but we'll both be very careful with them. Thanks for the warning.

I'm glad your dd is OK! That is so frightening.

I wonder if some escalaters have an automatic stop (like a safety feature) built in for such an emergency. I shutter to think what would have happened to your dd's toes had she been wearing the strap on the croc, which is how my kids wear their crocs. I'm glad she was able to get her foot out of the shoe quickly.

I am so glad that your DD is okay. I hope the rest of your trip went on without any more problems. On a side note, this should be a lesson on wearing rubber/plastic shoes anywhere except at the beach or swimming pool area. They are just not safe.

I'm so glad your DD is ok. Our news did a report on the dangers of crocs and escalators back in July. Said it was the #1 cause of foot injury emergency room visits at that time.

http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/SIN50069.htm

I find it interesting that in that article, it says "Toh Chin Chuan, director of Unilift Components, which supplies safety equipment for escalators, told Reuters that rubber footwear was more likely to be caught in escalators than shoes made of sturdier materials.

Toh said accidents involving rubber clogs and escalators were "quite common".

And the makers of crocs are calling for better elevator safety instead of trying to fix their shoes.

Thank God your daughter is ok!! That could have turned out so badly!! Thanks for sharing your story, it will make myself and dd more aware of the danger.

I'm not normally squeamish but eurgh after reading that article.
I'm gonna be really paranoid noe about how I stand on escalators!

Yikes!!! That is scary. My DB got his shoe caught in an escalator when he was 6 and his foot never fully recovered. I am glad you DD is ok and am rethinking my buying crocs for the kids.
