Hmmm....read about doing this on another thread. According to internet CRO, there are accommodations available for my dates but I'm on a waitlist. I'm I just S.O.L.? Can I call MS and complain about this? If so, can someone explain and make me feel better? :scared:

Don't know if I'm going to explain this properly. But here's a try. It's like you are comparing apples to oranges. These CRO rooms are not "our" rooms to have a go at. They belong to Disney (DVD??). A certain percentage of the inventory of all DVC properties is theirs to extract a profit with by putting them in the CRO pool. So there is nothing to complain to MS about.

Good luck on your waitlist though.

There are 2 separate inventories of rooms. There are rooms that are in the DVC member inventory and there are rooms in CRO inventory. The rooms in CRO inventory consist of rooms from points that DVD (Disney Vacation Development) owns and rooms from points that members traded out. For example, when a member books a cruise, DVC transfers rooms to CRO to rent to pay for that cruise. So it's very possible for CRO to have rooms and DVC not. It's the way the system works, it makes tradeouts possible.

As noted, no reason to complain. These are rooms owned by DVD and not declared into inventory, rooms gotten with points owned by DVD and rooms gotten with points given up by members for cash equivalent options like DCL.

How does DVD decide which dates/size of room to put into CRO inventory when a DVC member trades out? If I were to use 160 of my BWV points to trade out, how do they decide exactly which room to add to CRO's inventory? There could be lots of options that equal 160 worth of point value. Seems like they would have some flexibility in this regard and could do some switching if necessary. Always wondered...

They transfer the points to an account they control. I've been told by higher ups that they try to pick less high demand options and really try to avoid 3 BR and premier time. I'm sure they try to spread it around as well. Given that 3% trade out with II plus the cash equivalent trades like DCL, I'm sure this must be a delicate balancing act. From what I've seen, maybe as many as half are exchangers in jan and Sept, at least for SSR & OKW.

Last July when I booked SSR through Expedia, they had all categories from SSR available for Thanksgiving(Sunday before-Friday after). Went with a 2br.

You're not totally out of luck--if CRO has the room you want, you can book it through them. Sometimes it works out to be a pretty good deal to do it that way if you're looking at a weekend night and can get an annual passholder or even AAA rate. (That's assuming you can't use the 25% member cash discount.) It can end up costing even less than points.

DH and I considered this for a moment, then saw the $$ signs add up quick! Don't think we could justify that much $$ for a quick trip. But thanks shellebelle!

We'll just wait and see I guess. We're going to try for a BWV studio at 7 months if nothing's come through at VWL by then. MAYBE something will work out.....We're also touring SSR and AKV models for a possible add-on when we're there in March. Maybe DH will fall in love with one of those and we can try there, too!

But I have to wonder, if those rooms wind up unsold, will CRO give them back to DVC at some point?

I'm not sure that's even an option. I think once they are in CRO inventory, that's where they are.

We were able to get a cash room through MS with NO discount. They had a discounted room with CRO but said we would probably have to move. I payed full price so we would not have to move. This trip is all about the late nights and we do not want to have to set our alarm clock this trip !

This would be undeclared inventory that was not even part of DVC at the time.

The only rooms DVC can likely have any chance of getting back are those from the breakage inventory of 60 days or less that were simply not reserved by members.

The funny thing was Expedia had the 2br & 3br villas, but the only thing available through CRO was Studios & 1BR's at the time.

Expedia, Travelocity and other large travel agencies sometimes make deals and buy up availability with the intent on selling later for a profit. This happens a lot with cruises but definitely happens at DL and WDW as well. Sounds applicable in this situation. Also Expedia and similar companies will at times appear to have something but when it comes right down to getting a formal reservation, they end up not having it at all. I've seen this myself in several instances including GC at DL. CRO seems to have trouble moving larger units more than smaller ones so I'd guess Disney would be anxious to move those larger units for a guaranteed amount even if 30-50% of the rack rates. And given that it would create a real issue if they let them go to the general public for that type of discount as well as defeating the purpose of wholesaling them for cash up front.
