Hi,

We just returned from the World and my next attempt in learning more about my camera and how to take better photos. I have been reading manuals and trying shots with my camera.

Please be offer any and all criticism for my one lone dark photo that I thought turned out ok. I have a Canon Rebel XT. The lens was the 50, ISO 1600, shutter (?) 1/125.

Thanks!

Debbie

Most of the really good dark shots I have seen here were taken at a higher ISO, which your camera (and mine) cannot do. This was the one shot on that ride you might have been able to get, and you did, so congrats!

What was the aperture you used for this shot? With only 1600 ISO available to you, maybe a faster lens might help????

Not bad at all. You certainly had plenty of shutter speed at 1/125...I've found if you have a nice steady hold you can actually shoot as slow as 1/60 on moving rides and get the shot. You were at F1.8 which was as wide open as you could go...ISO1600 I presume is your max...if yes, you may stuggle a bit on some of the much darker sections of the ride, where I've found ISO3200 even with an F1.4 lens is needed to get shutter speeds above 1/30.

I think in this case you probably could have gotten away with not using +.3EV compensation...and if needed you probably could have used a 1/100 or 1/80 shutter speed to get just a bit more light to expose the shot without introducing blur.

Keep at it for sure! Practice helps as much as the camera does - I found I got better even with my last DSLR which was really an ISO100-1600 camera (it had 3200, but it was really pushing it!) the more times I tried on POTC and HM.
