Criminal Charges Filed Against Day Care Workers

Last Friday we had, what I believe, is the first death of a baby from being left in a car this year. I don't know what it is with people, but Texas has several of these cases each summer. This one is different in that it happened while the two-year old was at day care. They had just came back from a field trip to Chuck E. Cheese's and the two-year old was left in the van. No one noticed he was gone until after nap time was over. By then, he had been locked in the van for over two hours. He died early this morning.

I feel so sorry for the parents of this little boy. My thoughts will be with them. I mean, you think your kids will be safe when you drop them off at day care...you don't think that something like this will happen.

Now that the boy has died, police are charging the two day care workers with criminal negligence to a child, which is a second-degree felony. They could spend 2 to 20 years in prison. It must be awful for them too, because I'm sure they didn't intentionally leave the baby in the van. It's such a sad situation :(

Sadly it probably won't be the last before Summer is over:(

I can't believe the daycare workers didn't do something as simple as a headcount when they got back to the center.

This is what my mom said...she use to work at a day care and she said they did a head count before going somewhere, before leaving wherever they had been, and when they got back to the class.

I'm sure it won't be the last either since we always have so many in Texas. I guess I just can't understand how people can leave a baby in the car. I know I ALMOST did it once, but I got about three steps away from the car and realized I forgot DD and turned right back around and got her. How could people not notice for HOURS that they're missing a kid???

Somebody needs to invent something that will alert people to kids left in cars, a heat sensor on the car seat with an alarm.

I think I heard once that they were in the process of making a car seat like that.

Very sad.:(

I feel for the family as well as the daycare workers. They must all be going through some very emotional, guilt ridden times.

These stories always crush me.

I also feel that daycare programs should not be taking young ones out of the facility for anything. The responsiblity is great with the parents, let alone having to keep track of numerous toddlers to take in and out of a vehicle.

I personally wouldn't allow the outing and find other arrangements for that day with a child that young - please don't fire away, that just how I really feel :(

I'm sure there are going to be a lot more parents feeling the same way after this incident.
