Cricut and SCAL?

I've read that Provo Craft is suing SCAL and Make The Cut, and I've read that you cannot use SCAL 3 with the Cricut. I have SCAL 1 (on the Mac that I boot as a PC) and 2 (on the laptop) and they still work with my Baby Bug - will that change? I just bought the Cricut Cake and was hoping to use it with SCAL. Does anyone know if I can register it with the SCAL 1 or 2 that I already have?

Does anyone have experience with other cutting machines that will work with software so I don't have to buy tons of carts? I was looking at the Bosskut Gazelle because it can cut so many different things (including chipboard, which I haven't had luck with on the Cricut, even with the deep cut blade) and has great reviews on-line. I don't want to spend $500, but I am considering it. At approximately $40 (on sale) per Cricut cart, $500 is only 12-13 carts, and when put that way, the Gazelle sounds like a bargain.

if you update the firmware on the cricut then SCAL1 or 2 won't work anymore

I'm thinking about the cameo shillote (spelling??) that just came out or the Ecraft (no mats) both are suppose to be good - check the craft edge MB there should be alot of reviews there for the different machines that do work with SCAL

I have the Cameo on my list. I read a lot of excellent reviews and it's not super expensive.

Reddy one of my friends has the eCraft and while the no mat thing sounded appealing she finds it frustrating because she can only cut off one piece of paper at a time. Using a cutting program like MTC, SCAL or even Design Studio, you can plan out your cuts so you know where to place different papers.
