Thanks for sharing! For Christmas, my mom (a librarian), gave books to my brother, DH, and bro-in-law.

Brother- How to Cook with Mustard. (He just built a beautiful new house, but the only food in his huge fridge is mustard.)

DH- Hopscotch Around the World (He broke his foot playing hopscotch at EPCOT. The funniest thing is the fact that apparently in the US, hopscotch is played with 8 squares. In the UK, it's played with 10. It was on the last 2 that he broke his foot. )

BIL- Everybody Poops and one other book that I can't remember. (While on vacation with my parents, he saw these books in a bookstore window. He laughed until he cried and then took pictures of them to share with everyone. We really enjoyed reading these on Christmas! Who thinks to write this stuff....)

'Everybody Poops' is a big hit with every preschooler I've seen.

The creepiest book we've read is 'Outside, Over There'. My MIL bought it for DD and after we read it, we all kind of looked at each other like WTH? DD thought it was weird and creepy, she much prefers other books by Maurice Sendak. I've read that the movie 'Labyrinth' was inspired by this book, and it shows.

Rainbow Fish, and the Giving Tree both creep me out.

In Rainbow Fish, there's a beautiful fish who looks different from the others -- so they pester him (bully him?) until he gives away his body parts, and then they agree to be his friend. YUCK!

The Giving Tree is meant to be read as a message about giving too much, but often is read to children as a model of how to be giving -- I want my children to be generous, but not to the point where I end up as a stump for an ungrateful person to sit on.

Some of those books look like they're books written specifically to help children with specific issues. While I think it's sad that children have to deal with issues, I don't think that helping them deal with them by explaining them in an appropriate way is "creepy".

I think the weirdest book I ever owned was one called "Else-Marie and the Seven Little Daddies". It was about a girl who had 7 tiny daddies, who added up in size to one big one. They were all identical. It was a fun story, but the back told all about how this wonderful book would make children aware of all the different kinds of families around them. Ummmm, I live in a very diverse place, I thought my kid knew lots of different types of families, but every family my son knows has either zero, one, or two daddies. I know one kid with 4 moms (both moms remarried) but they are neither identical nor tiny. We read the book many times and loved it, but never thought of it as anything other than a delightfully ridiculous story.

Maybe that's my problem. I've written three children's books and I can't get them published. Obviously, I picked subject matter that is too tame. Next time, I'll put some controversial concepts in and see it that helps.

I always picture the daughter in law walking in on them and thinking, "WTH did I marry????" ...And I thought MY MIL had trouble cutting the apron strings

I find in my 1st grade classroom that the books they love the best are nonfiction- unfortunately, they lose that somewhere along the way. We just did a big unit on China and read the story of Tian Tian, the giant panda at the Smithsonian Zoo. The kids LOVED this story and learned so much! Animal stories are always big hits!

I totally agree. The book is cute to the point where mom drives over with a ladder strapped to the roof of her car, then it goes into wah-huh????? territory. Mommy needs to learn to let go!

I agree! Several years ago I was teaching at a preschool, and a student brought I Love You Forever in. He asked me to read it, and I did, but I didn't have time to preview...What a bunch of crap!!

I LOVE Maurice Sendak!! However, depending on my mood, I either adore or get creeped out by his book Outside Over There. A girl has to rescue a baby taken by goblins. As a teen I enjoyed reading this to the kids I babysat because it scared the crap out of them.

I kept waiting for that to be on the list! I remembered the book as being one of my brother's favorites when he was little and it being a cute story. Saw it at Barnes & Noble a few years ago and picked it up to show DH, who was horrified! I didn't remember the ending, guess I must have blocked it out

My sister brought this from England for DS. It's about a mole who gets pooped on and tries to figure out who did it. Every animal he accuses proves its innocence by pooping so the mole can see its poop doesn't look like the poop on the mole's head. There is also a "plop up" edition.

I actually thinks Roahld Dahl's books are kind of creepy and not really for kids...I don't think he liked children very much at all. He seemed to like to torture the child-characters in his books.
