What is the best way (and safest way) to check your credit report?

You are entitled to one free credit report from all three agencies once a year (it's federal law). Here is the website devoted to that service: https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp

Checking your own credit score it what is know as a "soft inquiry" and it does not affect your score. A credit card company, for example, would put through a "hard inquiry," which does affect your score.
