In Dec. we had to get a new Amex number because someone charged $1100 in car parts online to our card. Now on my NEW card there are charges for MSN HOtmail Plus and NetZero Voice...but they used the OLD card. Don't see how that's possible. On the phone now with MSN. Already cancelled Net Zero. Next call is to Amex, of course.

Wow, how did the charges get approved form the old number? I'd be flipping on Amex right now.

I had a weird charge on my Cap 1 card yesterday. It was from a limo service in Boston MA. I live in Buffalo, haven't been to that area in over 20 years!

I called and they looked on their computers, the number was key entered at the business. They closed my account immediately, credited my card (only 49.50, but still!) and will be starting a fraud investigation.

I went on-line and checked all my other cards, so far nothing else.

It's VERY frustrating...now I have take time to fix this!!!! ANd worry about it happening AGAIN I guess.

This same thing happened to me with American Express! It took many letters to them to finally credit my account (it was also a internet service) They initially refused saying it was a valid charge. It was a valid charge but I hadn't given them my new card # and it went through on the old #. They never could tell me why it happened but decided to give me the credit because "I was such a good customer"! I lost a lot of respect for American Express over that!

got a real smart one...she couldn't understand why I wanted A NEW ACCOUNT NUMBER!!!!!!! WHAT?!

I just hope these people aren't doing anything else with MY NAME! I have to try to look at my credit report.

Just dispute it with American Express. Alot of times they put those amounts through as valid because so many people forget to change their automatic bill payments when they get new account numbers and the amounts ARE valid.

If the charge isn't valid, the merchant will not have any proof of authorization and they will settle the dispute in your favor.

The main reason that I keep my American Express card is because they have always done such a good job in protecting me when I order stuff online etc.

I had the same thing happen to me when I had a credit card number stolen - after getting the new number, an old charge still went through. It just took me a 3 minute call to the credit card company to get it taken off. It was also for an internet service.

Go online and put a fraud alert on your credit reports TODAY!

www.experian.com
www.equifax.com

I can't remember the 3rd one. You may only have to do one and it will carry over to the others(we did thos one time.)

I would do it right now.

DIdn't know you could do that! I'll look into it now. Thanks!

luvwinnie,

I don't know how much help it will be in this situation but it should prevent someone from opening up new credit in your name-hopefully.

From what I remember, you can add the fraud alert online.

Have you straightened things out with AMEX?

You may want to take a look at your credit reports while you are on the websites and make sure there are no strange accounts on there.

Good luck. :grouphug:

I have had an AMEX card since 1989 and have never erver had a problem with them. I don't even bother to try to dispute the charge with the vendor, I just call AMEX, tell them the charge is bogus, and they take it from there.
No receipts, no story, no 9 quarts of blood and 17 forms of ID. Nothing.

The ONE time I tried to fix a phony charge with a vendor.....

We had a dispute with a resort in Ft Lauderdale that had had charged DH's account for $1400 for a deposit on a supposed stay that was reserved. I had called the resort, they asked me to FAX them my statement and that they would investigate it themselves. The credit would take up to 10 business days. I told her that I would just call AMEX and she says "NO!, dont call AMEX, we will fix it" I waited 10 days, no fix, I call AMEX and the problem was fixed in 10 minutes.

AMEX will always stick up for you, where MC and VISA usually make you wait.

I just got a call from chase credit card fraud....I called chase bank back to be sure it really WAS them that called and it was...someone using my old debit card number, that I haven't had since Nov, was trying to use it online yesterday...they put through a 2.00 amount to make sure it would work then tried to charge on thing for 3800.00 and another for 1800.00....jokes on them though, I just payed my bills and property taxes sothere is like 10.00 in that account LOL...needless to say all charges were denied and that number is now cancelled.

I did it at Experian and they notify the others. Great service. Thanks again for letting me k now!

The thing is, when you have an account closed due to fraud or whatever reason, you don't expect them to put any charges through on the closed account number and as far as I'm concerned if they do you should not be liable for them. The don't see it that way.

Who doesn't see it that way? American Express? Have you ever had a case where American Express did hold you liable for a charge you didn't make?
I've had an American Express card since the early 1990's -- I've disputed charges when a waitress stole my number and ran up charges, I've disputed online companies that sent me crappy merchandise, I've disputed unauthorized charges.... I've never had a problem with them removing the charges immediately.

In fact last month I bought an outfit from an online retailer, didn't like it, and returned it with delivery confirmation. A week went by and they never credited my account. I also didn't even mess with the merchant, just went right to American Express and told them it had been returned - faxed a copy of my delivery confirmation to their number. They immediately removed the charge, contacted the retailer - who never bothered to respond to them :rolleyes2 , and then settled in my favor.

As I said, they have really taken care of these issues for me in the past and that is why I keep the card.

Yes, American Express. It wasn't that I was disputing the charge - I wanted to know why an internet company was able to put a charge through on a closed account - and have it show up on my new account. Like I said, when I close an account I don't expect anymore charges to be put through on that number. Isn't that the whole idea of closing the account, so no one can use it?

I got an answer to this just now! If it 's a "contract" type deal...such as when you sign up for Internet service for a full year and pay monthly, it still goes through. I assume to protect the MERCHANT. There is no way around it. I just have to fight it again if it occurs again.

I figured it was something like this - all I asked them for was an explanation. When I finally wrote and told them to cancel my account they decided to give me a credit for the charge (I never asked them for a credit). I was just concerned about the charge being made on a closed account! Thanks for the info!
