I am leaving in 10 Days! :cool1: and was wondering about the credit card that you can put on the room key for purchases. Does this card need to be a regular credit card or can I use my debit card w/ the visa logo? I didn't want to assume I could so I thought I would ask.

Thanks Everyone

I don't think Visa has anything to do with it. I wouldn't want to put a debit card on the room since they put a hold on your account for x amount of $$$. I would use a regular credit card.. MC, Visa, Amex, Discover... but I don't think I would give them my debit card....

Yes you can use your debit card. No they don't put a hold on the funds but charge $1 to it to make sure it is good. I have done this numerous times with no problems.

Thank you so much for the help, I feel better now that I know!

I know you didnt ask this question - but dh was listening to the radio, and a report on how credit cards are encoded on room keys - and he said "ALL but DISNEY!! You know that's GREAT news, Disney is ahead here" "yes dear"!! :rotfl:

One more thing not to worry about if you lose your 'room key' someone cant just swipe it and get all your credit card info!!

If you lose your room key and have your credit card on it, can someone charge to your credit card? Why do people put credit cards on their room keys? Is it required? Would I be able to carry my cc and charge as I shop?

You do not need to put a credit card on your room key. You can if you want. But you can also just carry around your regular credit card. People do it so they have less to carry with them. If you do put a credit card on the room key, and lose it, you can report it lost and it won't work anymore. Plus, just like a credit card, there is a place on the back to sign the card. At disney they seem to check that signature more than most places, so it would be hard for someone to forge your signature.

You can put your debit card down. We did it, and then paid if off with traveller's check every couple of days. We wanted to be able to charge to the room and pay it off at once, rather than carrying around a bunch of traveller's checks. We just made sure we paid it off before we hit our charging limit (when they would automatically charge your debit card).

The other thing with debit cards is to be sure you can make a big charge on a single day. My limit was $250. I knew I was going to be using it for our trip to BCV last June, so DH went to the bank and changed the limit from $250 to $2500. It bit much but that's what they did. Well, long story short, when I went to check out, the bank wouldn't accept the charge!! My had left two days before, so I called him at home. He called the bank and they couldn't figure out what the problem was. So, he went to the bank and talked to the manager that had changed the limit on the debit card. Well....it seems that he changed the limit on DH's card but not mine!!! Same account but different cards?! Go figure. So, they apologized and changed my limit also. I kept dh and the bank on my cellphone until I had physically checked out!!! So, be aware of that previously set limit.

I would think if you loose your room key, the theif can charge to your room account anywhere on Disney property until you report it. But once reported, they can't, and you won't have to cancel your real credit card, so that's a bonus. I would think Disney would try to work with you to remove any fraudulent charges on your room key, but that's just a guess on my part.

I'm with safetymom, they do not put credit card info on your room key. Instead, I believe it charges to your room which you have probably put a credit card down on.

The problem with debit cards is if they are lost or stolen and used, your are responsible for the loss. With credit cards, by law you are only responsible for the first $50 charged.

I would put a credit card down when you check in. If you choose to pay the balance off with a debit card when you check out they will let you (or cash, travelers cheques, etc.)
